The Body Shop big and curvy mascara was kindly given to me at their recent event. However we have not really seen eye to eye. Or to be more precise the mascara has made my eye go all funny.
When I had my recent tests at the opticians he said he saw little bits of black stuff floating in my eye which we narrowed down to either being eyeshadow or mascara. Since I had been testing this mascara since receiving it it seems that this is the culprit. I have been given drops to stop inflammation and a cream to use overnight to clean and moisturise my eyes.
The mascara does have a rather distinctive scent (let's call it 'funky') and at £10 it is more expensive than my beloved L'oreal Voluminous 5x mascara which is in another league.
The wand is nice and it does give a nice defined look however the lashes dry with a crispy finish (dead spider leg is a good description).
The final test however came when I used my new special eye moisturiser which my optician said would clean out my eye overnight. After removing what I thought was every last scrap of this mascara with my Bioderma makeup remover, Korres Cleanser, Elemis Toner and then a spritz of facial mist (phew) I really thought that my eyes were clean.
I woke up after using the night-time eye moisturiser to the corner of my eye full of black goop where the cream had picked up every last bit of black debris and cleaned it out of my eye. There was obviously a lot and certainly more than I expected. I'll be frank, it was minging.
So to be honest I cannot recommend this mascara if, like me, you have sensitive eyes and/or wear contact lenses. It most definitely contains at least 2 types of fragrance as I checked the ingredients list on the website which could be the problem.
I think this is probably the most negative review I have ever done. Erm. Sorry! I have honestly never had a problem with any other mascara like this before.

You shouldn't apologise..you are only being honest! Great, honest review Sarah! xx
I hate that, when you think you've gotten it all off, then next morning there are clumps? Where do they come from?
Gee wizz what a let down!
Thank yourself lucky you got it for free so at least you didn't loose a tenner and have kindly saved all of us from loosing a tenner too! Phew!!
xxx
This sounds terrible. I saw a couple of other people denouncing it on twitter last night and it looks like it's a pants product all round. I have really sensitive eyes (made a few trips to Moorfields in my time) so this is an absolute no no. Thanks for the warning.
that sounds gross! good job you went to the opticians- imagine if that had built up over a week or a month - gross thought there sorry! xxx
Thanks for the warning! I've just got L'Oreal Million Lashes which is impressing me but I'm a bit worried about a chemical type smell. May do some ingredient tracking of my own!
Gross! I am kinda curious what would come out of my eyes now with some of this crazy moisturising stuff... I always get dry eyes etc, I wonder if I have some kind of secret stash of mouldy mascara lurking? Yuck!!
Thanks for your honest review! Won't be touching that mascara with a bargepole! x
2nd time in a week, ive heard not great things about this mascara, ill keep away.
WOW thanks for sharing!

Gotta love a good honest review.
Is it wrong that this review made me want to get the eye moisturiser thing you mentioned - I want to clean gunk from my eyes too!
I am totally with Beautyjunkielondon, your description of the black gunk really made me want to "wash" my eyeballs too!
Best, Lisamarie
Eeek that's so scary!
this is the reason i read blogs, especially yours, to get honest reviews so I know which products to avoid.
It's good that even though you were given this for free you're not sucking up to companies so you get more free stuff.
@scouselovesmakeup true, it's just whenever I say anything bad about something people who like it get cross!
@chickadee1066 I think it gets stuck under your eyelid.? Maybe!
@Sprinkleofglitter exactly!
@Laura thanks for the comment, I was definitely unimpressed and it's gone in the bin. On another note I picked up those hair vitamins, I just have to remember to take them now...
@City Girls Fashion Box sorry :P
@Essjay23x it's odd as YSL mascara has quite a strong scent, and I am fine with that...
@Gem Fatale if you have dry eyes then use a warm flannel on your eyelids to melt the blocked oil glands, thats why eyes are dry as the oil glands are blocked. Sorry that's even more gross.
@thhjasmine ooh who else said that if you remember?
@Beautyjunkielondon it's lacrilube, just an over the counter product for use after eye surgery apparently!
@Rebecca all of the reviews are honest on my blog hun, it's just rare that I physically detest something! Sometimes I get sent stuff and send it back if I am really not that interested in it x
I do actually like this mascara a lot! But I'm not cross at you for not liking it lol! Sounds like a horrid experience :(
I don't get the 'crispy' finish that other people have been reporting, so maybe I just have eyelashes that agree with it?! Mascara seems to be such a subjective thing. I agree with the fact that it smells really strongly (but I quite like the smell?! I know, I'm odd)... No eye flakes for me though, I've been using it since January and I've had no irritation.
I might put a link to this in my review post tomorrow just to warn people that those with drier eyes might have issues.
