Begging Emails

When Good Emails Go Bad

I apologise in advance for this rather random, and possibly moany post but I feel I should say something, in the hope that it might stop or reduce my problem.

For months now I have received sob story or just plain rude emails but I woke up today to recieve 32 such emails and to be honest it's just too much, sometimes it just feels like a personal attack.

The emails range from ones calling me names, saying I am ugly, sob stories about people who have illnesses wanting my makeup, people wanting the items I have got free to be sent to them, people who can't afford makeup who want me to send it to them and people who apparently haven't got paypal therefore expect free makeup.

The worst for me are the ones saying things like

"I have been sick for such a long time now I don't have long left, and would love it if you could share your makeup with me, as we don't have it where I live"

"please send me your makeup that you don't want - anything basically.  I can't afford it and don't think it's fair that you have so much".

Most of the emails seem to be about being having cancer or dying.  Surely these can't be real?  If you have cancer and it's bad enough that you are dying  a) you are likely to be in hospital or a hospice and b) makeup is the last thing on your mind???  My mum has had cancer and I think she was more worried about the fact that she was bald and laying in an intensive care ward than the fact that she couldn't buy any lipsticks.

I hadn't planned on posting about this as I felt bad in case they were real but I really can't believe that they are any more especially when I googled the email addresses of a couple of the people that contacted me - and both were beauty bloggers themselves!  When you are ill you need help, sympathy and love, not makeup.  And when you are poor there are more important things in life to makeup it's not a necessity. I am lucky enough that I have a job so I can buy makeup that I like, but I do work hard at my job and long hours.

Yes I do get sent some makeup free but to be honest it's mostly skincare and haircare and I do share it out with friends and relatives so the emails calling me a "greedy bitch" are rather uncalled for! I do also do giveaways which unless stated are all paid for our of my own pocket so if you want something free just enter those.

Is this just me? I don't even have half as many followers as lots of bloggers so I don't know why they are targeting me in particular. I know that spam on comments has gone insane recently with 'follow my blog' or 'I followed you so follow me'.  I even got spammed on twitter yesterday by someone with 1 blog post saying they needed more followers before they even bothered to post more regularly?  What is your opinion?

Never had this happen to me...I've never even heard of this! Sorry you have to read those emails. I rarely get e-mails though... haha That could be a good or bad thing I guess.

Woah that's a lot of emails. I don't get emails like that and hopefully won't. I agree, I think it's pretty sad to say you're dying just for make up. Even if it were true, make up would be the last thing on your mind! I think it's really scabby and very rude to be saying things like that, especially someone calling you a 'greedy bitch', there's no need and we all work hard for what we get. I also don't think it's right if we get abusive comments for getting sent free products. Jealously can really take over some people. x

I can't believe people actually do this! Its disgusting and so cheeky!

omg how annoying! I dont have a crazy amount of followers, which I enjoy because I dont get as much spam. This must be sooo annoying. I'm absolutely sure that none of them are true, just scabby people trying to con people into giving them free stuff. Cheeky bastards x

Tali (TheGlossGoss) had this same problem and she also felt targeted. People that make up stuff like that are just disgusting! They clearly have no idea what it is like to go through it or see a family member go through it and are selfish and nasty to even say it. People calling you ugly are obviously suffering self esteem issues and attacking others makes them feel better..I wonder if they would do a youtube account and show themselves..I doubt it very much! You are beautiful Sarah and I love reading your posts and watching your youtube vids..try not to let these people get you down and remember instead how highly others think of you.

It's kinda sad that people are e-mailing you with fake sob stories because there are people out there who really do have cancer and fatal illnesses. By sending those fake e-mails in my eyes it's like those people are mocking them. Also if you have haters then you're doing something right haha

Love your blog btw :)

This is awful! People really take the piss when it comes to freebies. Luckily I've never had begging emails, but when I worked at a well known cosmetics brand I used to get piles of letters every week from people basically begging for freebies. Jog on. If you want it, you buy it.

I do get some comments about the fact that I get freebies, but to be honest these are shared amongst my friends, family and colleagues - and I spend all my spare time writing a blog for them to enjoy FOR FREE! As bloggers we have to be dedicated and do what we love for nothing but the passion. I think it's more than fair that we get a few lovely products in return.

Next time you get one just use three words - Jog. On. Douche.

31 emails!? That's a lot in one day. Can't believe they said that o.o' I just want to say that you are a beautiful person inside and outside and I really like reading your reviews :)

My heart goes out to those who truly are sick. However, I find it tacky to ask someone who is essentially a stranger for hand me downs, regardless of one's state of health. And, like you stated, you have to wonder how many of these people are truly ill.

Not too long ago, I saw a girl asking celebs for their Christian Louboutins. Kind of crazy, huh? She said she really wanted a pair, but couldn't afford it. Hey, get in line, missy! A lot of us can't afford them. LOL!

I'm sorry your inbox is being inundated with these types of requests. My guess is, the people who are writing are kids. Hopefully after seeing this post, some of them will back off!

Firstly, I had no idea that people did this, i'm rather shocked. bloody freaks!!

Secondly, ignore any hate comments, i cannot believe people have the rudeness to call you names, your a lovely girl who cracks me up with your one-liners.

Some people are so pathetic, even so far as not even preventing you from find out who they are (name & shame) i say!

keep up the amazing work on your blog, i look forward to reading you new blog posts and youtube vids, dont let these bastards bring you down :) xxx

I get so many i am a young girl aged 14 living in a village and dying of cancer..send me your make-up you have too much! I even had to post about it!!

People can be really pathetic and ridiculous! I get spammed on regular basis, mostly from africa and those UK lottery things ever since I have started blogging, but that?! That is some crazy s***!
Plus, it is so obvious that they have never had a relative seriously sick or with cancer. They would have learnt not to use those things as an excuse.
Cheap ass cows! LOL

Milly said...

Crumbs...there are actually people out there that would do this?! I have never been subject to this, thankfully, but I think this is disgraceful behaviour! Unbelievable and I feel so very sorry for you being targeted like this. You are far from a greedy bitch...surely begging for free makeup because of some hoax illness is suggesting slight greediness is it not!!

I have NEVER received any emails like this, let alone bitchy comments on my blog. Oh actually, I've had two on my blog and she knows who she is. Silly cow. Anyway, I digress..

Tali (Gloss Goss) posted about the same issue a few wks back. I think these sickos must breed from You Tube. It's pathetic, sad, sick and the rest and I doubt this post will deter people from sending these kind of emails to be honest. There are too many dickheads to go round unfortunately.

I can't get my head round it. It's ridiculous.

How rude! I am shocked and sorry to hear that you get such emails. You are right in all that you say! I have never had any such emails. Try not to let them bother you though hun, You're lovely xxx

Yano people are really sad.
Dont let it get to you, these people are just ridic' if you get an email like that just simply delete it.

Ugh people annoy me!!

Phoebe said...

I don't think i'm at the stature to get these emails yet, but i've been spammed on twitter A LOT recently. Both from pointless companies to random beauty bloggers wanting freebies.

I would be very skeptical about those emails, I hardly see them being real - as like you said, make up wouldn't be up there with the top priorities.

I would just class them as junk mail - It might be harsh if they turn out to be real, but I am 99% sure they're fakes.

Jo said...

Tight bitch... send them stuff! hahaha.

Honestly though that is beyond a joke. 32 emails in one day. I knew this kind of thing went on because of a post Tali made a while back. Cannot believe they target you too. Luckily Ive never experienced this and I hope I never do aswel.

jealousy, is really the green monster that is hidden within all human beings. and once it is unleashed, there is no ending to it.

i used to receive these sort of demoralizing and un-needed critisism in my comment section (although i never receive them through emails), therefore i set the comments setting to eliminate anonymous haters leaving any comments.

and i do have some leaving me comments, asking my to follow them as they had followed me, which of course i found out that it is untrue. its like kind of a trend nowadays to put other people down or gain popularity no matter what means they have to use.

but i do found one thing that is effective to tone down these unwanted negative attention. which is to IGNORE THEM. i did this for a few weeks, and miraculously, they sort of disappear. weird. but true. maybe trying to clap with one hand really doesn't work at all. ^__^

stay strong. don't let them depress you because you are beautiful not only on the outside, but also on the inside. you deserve all the love you can get. that's why i am an avid reader of yours because i love you and your blog :)

Primp and Preen said...

That's ridiculous, I cannot believe that people are that rude. You're so right to post about it.

Tanya said...

I must say nothing surprises me these days, the lengths people will go to. As you said and many others who have commented if you are dying or cancer or anything else makeup is the last thing on your mind. If it were me I would name & shame them, its disgusting and extremely rude. As for the bitchy emails/comments they are just jealous and have issues with themselves. Don't let this deter you from doing what you are doing, 99% of people love you and just remember you can't please all of the people all of the time xx

ShineandSparkle29 said...

I have twittered you about this but the more I thought about it, the more outrageous I thought it was. A couple of years ago, I was seriously ill in hospital and the last thing I thought about when I was at my illest (is that even a word?!) was make up! The only item of skincare I needed or wanted to use was lip balm as my skin was wrecked by all the medication I was on! It was only when my Mum showed me my overgrown and hideously bushy eyebrows in a mirror that I begin to bother about what I looked like!! My aunt has just been diagnosed with cancer and it makes me really angry that people use the disease in this way. Ignore them, they don't deserve your time! x

Louise said...

That is shocking I read Tali's post and found this so disturbing -if there beauty bloggers name and shame and you ignore any comments about you personally you are a gorgeous girlie xxx

Karla said...

This is really bad. Surely if they were really ill they could contact companies themselves and be asked to be sent some freebies and not you who's just innocently blogging as a hobby.

Please don't let them put you off because us genuine bloggers love reading your blog :-) xx

Lucy said...

I'm glad you posted Sarah. It's not fair to try and guilt people - you work hard and deserve to be able to buy things that you want. xx

annie said...

this is awful and i'm sorry you have to deal with it. the best thing i can tell you is ignore them. if they are not getting a reaction from you it will stop being rewarding. you work hard on this blog! you deserve all the benefits you receive and should not feel guilty for those who don't have makeup!

at the first sign of begging or rudeness just click delete and whisper to yourself... go with love. :)

Cant believe people think these emails will actually work!

Wow, I can't believe that people send such emails. It's a shame really. It's negative people like that who take the fun out of blogging and doing what we do.

Dominique -aka- 美華ちゃん said...

How utterly disgusting!! I'm so sorry you're having to deal with such idiots.

Laura - Emerald Green 88 said...

Those people should be ashamed of themselves, I hope the emails stop soon!
And the fact that some of them are beauty bloggers - name and shame!!

birminghamlady said...

This is so stupid but true, unfortunatelly :| people think that just because they cand see your face and read your posts - they can actually own you. do they actually think that, even if it were true, you would go into charity for each of them? and if you really wanted to do charity you'd do it yourself for really wanting to and not because someone just begs of you.
I'm sorry to hear there are still people out there who would do this

Sophie said...

there are some right idiots out there! besides, any freebies you do get I think you totally deserve, you've put time aside to blog for the past year :) and the old I followed you you follow me. . drives me nuts! x

Redz2486 said...

I think its disgusting that people have the nerve to use such a horrible disease as a excuse to attempt to get free make up.

You use up your free time to write your blog, spend your own money to review items and have giveaways.

I'll admit, I don't have the money to always buy make up but you don't see me sending nasty, rude and arrogant emails to fellow bloggers telling them to send me their stuff.

To the nasty folks, get a grip, wake up and smell the roses Sarah works hard for a reason and it's not shower you with stuff you can go and buy yourself!

Sarah, I'm sorry your being targeted. I love your blog, like many others, and appreciate your kindness when you have giveaways etc.

Joyce said...

wow these people are just ruining things for the people who are really in need

Hinna said...

Don't apologise at all! It must be so disheartening to receive such e-mails. Being a more interactive platform seems to give people the impression that you are accountable to them. But do remember that this is your Blog.

You are not asking for anything by writing. You are simply doing what you enjoy doing, in much the same way that any one pursues their interests. You don't owe anything to anyone for it.

Keep in mind that there are many many people who absolutely adore reading your posts, and follow you because of a mutual love of beauty/art/products. There will always be those who are consumed by jealousy and greed, in many many ways, and it is something that we cannot eliminate. It's in all aspects of life.

So long as the pleasure of doing this far outweighs these negative depreciative messages, than I have no doubt that this blog will continue to go from strength to strength.

Big hugs xxx

32 emails? That is just ridiculous! I'm sorry you're getting so many of these, what on Earth possesses someone to write such things we'll never know. I do get odd emails occasionally, I think I might have had one of ones claiming they were ill. I just delete once I can see it's going that way.

I had the one about the need more followers before I post. I followed the link and saw it was all Stila stuff. Very dubious! I guess some people just never got the shame gene??!!

WoW! That kind of stuff reminds me of people who win the lottery and get bombarded with others wanting money from them. I just enjoy reading your blog. I don't need free anything and I guess I'm glad I blog with a much smaller following then you because I don't get that at all and I'm glad. Happy Day!

Retrodiva said...

Ridiculous! I've never had emails like that, but if I did, I'd just ignore them, or perhaps seriously think about calling them out for being so rude. People usually have an inflated idea of how much "free stuff" bloggers get anyway.

Gigi said...

My goshhhhhhhh!! I've never had this happen to me, then again I do more beauty related posts then make-up.
I know some youtubers/bloggers receive these kinds of emails b/c they mention on their profiles for people not to beg them for make-up, etc. I didn't know people stoop to saying those kinda of things! Sorry it's just a bit funny, as this can't be true.

laurawrites said...

I was completely shocked to read your post, I will admit that I don't have that much money to spend on make-up as I am a student but would never beg for it especially by making up complete quite offensive lies. There are always cheap make-up alternatives and I mainly review the cheaper end products however much I would love to own loads of expesive products. Don't let these people get to you and if I was you I would name and shame the bloggers that have been e-mailing you because I certainly wouldn't want to think that I am their follower, landi x x x

I think nicola's comment above sums it all up pretty perfectly... First of all, I couldn't believe that you googled some of the email addresses and they were beauty bloggers!! Are those emails for real!? That is really uncalled for and to use such excuses for the sake of free makeup. I have seen so many new blogs that are do giveaways and spam on blogs with large readership with just "I followed you please follow back." I just delete these sorts of comments straight away.

Firstly you earn your readers and theres no point in blogging if all you want is free stuff. I read your blog regularly so I appreciate what you share with your readers and what you are given by companies is rightly yours as long you disclose how you came to receive the product.

If your blog is good and you have put in the hard work such as yourself with your lovely blog I dont see how it is unfair. Those types of hate mail is just pure jealousy and malicious envy.

Its hard to get rid these completely but you can only ignore them and keep up the great blogging! Shame on you horrible email senders and comment spammers.

Take Care,
KK, xoxo

That's shocking that you are getting such emails? Might it be an option to change your email address for the blog or set up a strict filter or something?

It's disgusting that people use illness as a way to beg for make-up. There are some weirdos out there...

Try not to let them get to you - your blog is fab and they aren't worth your time.

Jackee said...

This sounds a lot like what many youtube gurus experience. I've seen videos posted about this very same subject. I can imagine it must be very annoying. I would just ignore these e-mails and try not to let them get to you!

Even if these people are sick and/or poor, their concern should not be getting free makeup. I think it's innappropriate and ridiculous to make such requests.

Sorry you have to deal with all the crap. Hope this does not discourage you from continuing to blog.

~Lisa said...

Oh, geez! This is in the blogger world as well? I started out on YouTube and because of this crap, I stopped and started blogging. I hope I don't get these emails soon =(

And seriously, you're sick and dying and makeup is on your mind? Shouldn't they be worrying about trying to survive? Not looking pretty on a death bed...=.=

Honestly, these people should work the things they want. Work for themoney to purchase makeup and work on your blog for more followers and free stuff from companies...=.=

why would anyone say they had cancer to get make up? that is so disgusting :\

I 'm sorry, bloggers???????????
Un*******believable!!!!
I would have SO named and shamed them!!!
And you make a great point, for anyone who has had the tragic experience of having a loved one suffer from a horrible illness like cancer, those "requests" seem even more unacceptable and well.. just plain tacky.
Cos IF it was true, you 'd assume they 'd know better than to beg for makeup out of jealousy, right? So, I 'm pretty sure it's not true at all!!!

I can't imagine what it must be like reading all that, just block and ignore!!!

Dear Sarah,
I´m sorry to hear what was happening to you with all those horrible mails... BUT the most important thing here is DON´T TAKE IT PERSONAL!!!
I´ve read some of the previous comments and many of them are right, jealousy and manipulation are horrible things and unfortunately many people have them. You are not responsible for whatever happen to all those people. As you said, you work hard for whatever you own and you can buy.
Sweetie, just focus in the good things, you have your Mum, you are such a beautiful girl, you have a great job that allows you to do what you want and you need, you have a good live, perhaps not perfect but really good, and you can see all the great answers from your followers that support you, so just enjoy the good things and LET GO all those bad words that upset people write. Words are empty is just the meaning we give to them that can hurt us or make us happy... please hon, don´t feel guilty for anything you own, you deserve all what you have now! Enjoy it!!! not matter what other people write in their mails, what other people thinks is not important, What is important is what you think! So think good!!!
Take care sweetie... and btw, with all those things that have been happening in my live and comming back to my country i had miss a lot in your Blog! i need to catch up!!! Ah! and your new look is FAB, you look gorgeous!!!
A big hug
Anahi xoxo
