Getting Lashed at New Year

30 December 2010

There are some fabulous new additions to the strip eyelash market as pictured above.  I had planned to photo them all on my eyes over the last week but since I've been ill I unfortunately haven't been able to, so I hope pictures of them are OK and still help if you are picking some up tomorrow for New Years Eve.

BEST FOR GLAMOUR

Girls with Attitude have a new range of gorgeous Burlesque false eyelashes which cost between £5.50 and £6.00 and are available from Boots. My favourite are the lashes called Showtime which are clusters tipped with a multicolour swarovski style crystal.  Perfect for adding a sparkle to the outer corner or just using along the lashline for some serious glamour

THE BEST SALON BRAND HOME USE LASHES

La La Lashes by Lash Perfect  are a salon quality lash to purchase for home use.  From the gorge boudoir style packaging to the eye catching designs these are some really gorgeous lashes and so soft and silky.  There are some designs as above that are embellished with glitter and others that have diamantes so absolutely perfect for NYE!  The lashes retails between £6 and £10 and contain a latex free adhesive so are perfect for anyone who is allergic to latex.

BEST FOR BLING

New for Christmas, La La Lashes also introduced strip lashes embellished with swarovski crystals and they are presented in a hot pink jewellery style box with a pair of mini tweezers. Perfect if you have to be the most glamorous looking one although these are slightly more expensive at £35.00 I know £35 is a lot for a pair of eyelashes, but I really want some now!

BEST FOR EASY APPLICATION

Eylure Naturalites are my go-to easy peasy lashes if anyone asks me which ones to try first.  They are shaped/curved and slightly shorter than other lashes so you are less likely to need to trim them - always a bit fiddly if you are a newbie.  The kit includes and adhesive that isn't bad - I prefer duo but this one isn't the usual tat you get with lashes and is contact lens friendly. They come in a mammoth range of designs so you are bound to find something you like.  I always like the ones that are marked volumising, as sometimes the long ones just look too long, and a bit silly if you are not 100% on your application skills.

They cost around £4-6.00 from Boots or their website they also make the very popular Girls Aloud and Sex and the City lashes although to be honest I prefer to pay less and get the regular eylure lashes as they are just as good!

BEST FOR PRICE

Eldora lashes are fabulous and a lot of them look spookily similar to Mac.  I only use the human hair ones as they are soft and silky and the ones in the pic at the top in the yellow box are the ones closeup above H103 cost £3.90.

BEST SALON TREATMENT

Pop along to a Blinc brow bar and choose your set of lashes for around £10.  They will apply them for you for free and as long as you look after them well they will last you for weeks of use afterwards!

Will you be getting glammed up for NYE?  What are your plans?

Semi Permanent Mascara - Not Quite a Lash Tint

28 December 2010

While I was researching eyelash extension brands on the Internet I came across a fairly new phenomenon that seems to have originated from the US, or at least has been given as a treatment there since September.

From what I have found, Semi-Permanent Mascara is also called Lash Dipping and is different in both effect and application compared to eyelash tinting or dying.

Different brands seem to offer different promises but most say the effect lasts from 3-6 weeks which would depend presumably on how quickly your lash cycle is as it can range from 30-90 days.

So what is the treatment?

The treatment is described as a jelly-like coating that is applied to the lashes and cured (or set) using a cold air method in a salon environment by a professional technician.
What is the point of having it done?
The finish mimics the look of mascara.  Instead of just dying the lash like a tint it also provides lift, separation, volume and hold so you don't need to wear mascara. I have seen brands claim that once the lashes have been cured they are water, sweat and heat proof.
I have some personal questions
I will try this treatment out if I can find anyone offering it as I would like to know:
  • Does it really look that good?
  • Are the lashes curled and if so does this drop over time?
  • Does it dry out your lashes?
  • Does it damage your natural lashes?
  • Is there aftercare i.e. such as lash sealant?
  • Do they layer it like normal mascara or is it just 1 coat?
If anyone else is interested in getting this done (not necessarily in the UK) these seem to be the brands that are doing it:
What do you think about this new treatment? Have you had it done - if so what did you think?

Accessorize Nail Varnish NOTD - Illusion Electric Blue

Another NOTD from Accessorize today.  I haven't been wearing makeup whilst i am ill as frankly I just can't be bothered. So I have had more time to play about with my nails.

As with the polish yesterday the quality is great, two coats and perfectly opaque. The first coat was quite streaky looking the second totally covered it.  I love the finish and at £4 it's pretty good all round.

You can buy here from their website

Is anyone else loving this nail polish range?

Accessorize Nail Varnish NOTD

27 December 2010

I was very kindly sent a box of Accessorize makeup by my friend Marcia after endless (fruitless) attempts in both Superdrug and Accessorize shops trying to find any of the makeup.  Even on the website the brand is tucked away under the lifestyle heading!

Colour: Illusion Pink Spice

Despite it being quite difficult to find the range has some real gems including this beautiful nail varnish, which is a very reasonable £4.  It was opaque in two coats and bears quite a close resemblance to OPI's 'The Show Must Go On' you can see a swatch for comparison if you click here I would really recommend you check the range out as it has lots of beautiful products at a really fair price.

I will swatch more of the items I was sent soon.  I have had bronchitis for the last few days so apologies for the lack of posting. I hope everyone is well and had a lovely Christmas.

A Beauty Observation

24 December 2010

Today's post is a question for you:

Some of you may know about my mobile spray tanning business www.bronzedglow.com but if not to cut a long story short I provide a spray tanning service directly in people's homes to save them having to leave the house.  While I am chatting to the clients as I set up/pack away or if the client has had the tan before so we have more time to talk as I don't have to explain the procedure, I often ask them a few questions - not to be nosy but to ensure their needs are met, and to see if I can give advice or learn something myself.

Overall the main point people say to me, on their first appointment before we do anything is something along the lines of :

"don't make me look like Jordan", "I just want it to look natural" and "it won't look too dark/orange will it?"

So far so normal...however this month's main beauty observation is that after a few goes with anything - tanning, eyelashes etc. etc. most people change their tolerance level, for example they say to me "can we go a bit dark on the tan", "loved the tan but just want it to be a bit more obvious".  These are the same people who to start of with wanted things natural!

So what I want to ask you is do you think people are scared to admit to me that actually, they don't want to look natural at all and like a bit of fakery? Or after they have been using a product or service for a while, they get used to the effects and just want more/brighter/darker etc.

All opinions very welcome.

Also if you are in the UK, Kent and South East London in particular I would love it if you could come and 'Like' my Facebook page for Bronzed Glow.  I will be looking for some eyelash extension models at some point during 2011 who will be provided with a full set of lashes in return for me taking pictures of the lash work I have done, so if you join the page I will update the details there.

And to all that celebrate -  Merry Christmas

Elizabeth Arden Prevage

The product range that I have heard the most about in regard to anti-ageing is Elizabeth Arden Prevage.  No other brand has been suggested to me and recommended so many times and has elicited comments from colleagues and beauty industry insiders such as "I never use anything else", "the best anti ageing products I have ever used", "totally worth the money".

I feel confident in suggesting these products for Christmas gifts for those 35+ due to the sheer volume of recommendations I have had, and all face to face when I have asked people what they recommend or what their favourite products are.  I do have a tendency to grill people such as hairdressers, beauticians etc. to glean as much info for the blog as possible, these people work with all sorts of ranges, and a lot of hairdressers that work on shows swap and share products with the makeup artists so they get the tips and tricks.

This Prevage skincare set from Harrods contains Prevage Advanced High Performance Anti-aging Serum (30ml) and Prevage Day Ultra Protection Anti-aging Moisturiser SPF 30 (30ml) at £97 it's obviously an expensive gift, but a full size serum costs around £150 and this way they can try both products to compliment each other.

This limited edition kit  from Debenhams comes in a little silver train case and contains Prevage Face plus three bonus deluxe travel sizes of Prevage Eye, Body and Prevage serum for £150.

The products are packaged in sleek silver containers fitting for the luxury skincare they contain. All in all a great present idea for mums, nans and aunties who will be chuffed for the rest of the year ;P

Make Your Own Body Scrub

22 December 2010

Before I had my last Dermaroller treatment I needed to ensure that all of the fake tan was off of my legs and the best way to do that is with oil, as it breaks down the product and an exfoliant as it scrubs it off.

I decided to make my own as I had most of the ingredients and I wanted to use pineapple because it was recommended to me by Alison from BeautyDenn  as the enzymes contained in pineapples can help the tan break down apparently,  so I wanted to see if this would work in a scrub.

To make enough for 3 full body applications

250g brown sugar
4-5 tablespoons of oil - I used olive oil
2 pineapple rings or 3 pineapple slices
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

Mash up the pineapple in a bowl and add the oil and vanilla essence.  Stir in the sugar a bit at a time until you reach the right consistency

I smeared this all over the area where the fake tan needed removing and left it on for 5 minutes while I took off my makeup.  I then dampened my hands and rubbed in a circular motion for a few minutes then rinsed off.  Some of the tan had come off but I needed to repeat this three times for all of the tan to fully be removed. The tan was 7 days old so I doubt this would work prior to that amount of time (it might do I am just not sure).

This left my skin soft, smooth and best of all - fake tan free without scrubbing hard or hurting my skin. The ingredients and mixing probably mean it's more expensive than some cheap drugstore scrubs but it was fun to do, smelled yummy and left my skin super smooth, so for an occasional treat I would definitely recommend it.

It was a bit messy!

Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color

21 December 2010

Color, colour, potato, petato!

When these first came out my first thought was £35, how much?!  I swatched one of the nude colours whilst in Selfridges and didn't really like it so decided to stick with my first instinct and steer well clear.

Fast forward a few months and I was sent the private blend lip colour in Pure Pink and I fell in love with it.

The colour, lasting power and the fact that I always get compliments on my Barbie lips means it is a firm favourite of mine.

The pigmentation is fantastic and this colour in particular lasts a long time on the lips.   I still think £35 for one lipstick is a lot and I would recommend picking your favourite and just buying the one if you're on a budget, there is an absolutely gorgeous red, a very pale nude and a gorgeous dark purple and while the collection of colours isn't vast every single colour is extremely well thought out and I am pretty sure the collection covers the bases of most people's favourite lippie shade.

I do like the advertising, rather saucy no? Overall these are beautiful lipsticks which look classy and apply like a dream, with packaging that is heavy and expensive (as it should after you've just re mortgaged your makeup bag to buy it).  Will one change your life? No.  Is it a gorgeous lipstick? Definitely!

Doing your brows doing your head in?

20 December 2010

I find pencilling in my eyebrows darker every day a right old bore.  So I was interested to attend an event hosted by Tracie Giles as she has 25 years professional beauty experience and she is a member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetics Professionals (USA) and the British Association of Beauty Therapists and Cosmetologists (UK). So you are definitely in safe hands.

The gorge Aly, looking good even in what looks like a bin bag!

Many woman may choose to have semi permanent makeup, from cosmetic reasons such as time saving, or people in the public eye who are often photographed to women who have had chemotherapy or alopecia.  Tracie is even able to help women define their lips and camouflage a cleft palette or tattoo a nipple after a breast reconstruction to make women feel better about themselves.  Tracie ensures she always gives the client the best advice possible, suggesting a natural look (aka not like Colleen Rooney's super dark brows) and mixes each client's pigments for their makeup by hand on the day of their treatment to compliment their skin tone.

Priya from beautywowza had a beauty spot put just above her upper lip.  The area was numbed with anaesthetic and then it took literally minutes to apply the carefully blended ink.  Tracie advised that it is best not to colour over current beauty spots as if you then have a problem with it you wouldn't be aware as the tattoo would mask it, which could obviously be potentially dangerous.  This is very sensible advice!

Then Aly had her eyebrows done, and Tracie measures these out perfectly and matches them to the rest of your features so they are absolutely perfect.

Whilst Ali had sensitive skin I didn't hear any actual yelps of pain, it apparently feels like you are being scratched. Once the skin is penetrated the anaesthetic can be absorbed quicker and easier so once that has got to work you do not feel any pain.  Your eyebrows will look slightly dark to start with but, depending on your skin tone you should have perfect brows in 3-5 days although you will need to go and get a top up at this point, as Tracie's philosophy is to go slow and add more if necessary rather than applying far too much to start with.  You can read more about Tracie's permanent eyebrow makeup

I was very impressed and a treatment which I had previously thought rather scary actually became very appealing.  I do hope at some point I will be able to get the eyebrow treatment done as it must save so much hassle. And you don't have to end up looking like a loon aka Colleen Rooney. Tracie suggested that the pigment chosen for her was just too dark, not that the eyebrows were a bad job.

As you can see there is an extensive
pigment selection to get exactly the right shade

Here are some before and after pics of Tracie's work:

As you can see her work is very natural and I think it really is enhancing without detracting from the natural features of all of the girls pictures.

If you are interested, all of the information, pricing and gallery of pictures can be seen here www.traciegiles.co.uk along with information about other treatments such as the gloss and go lip treatment! I think that looks amazing.

What do you think? Are you surprised that this sort of thing can look natural?

Jelly Pong Pong and my Pat Butcher FOTD

18 December 2010

I was sent some gorgeous goodies from Jelly Pong Pong to review.  As you can see they have amazingly girly packaging and, when I was a teenager and they had a store in Covent Garden I would often go in an gaze at all the gorgeous array of pink and glittery goodies. Sadly the shop was closed and I had just assumed that the brand was no longer for sale, but it appears I was wrong and they have a website www.jellypongpong.com where you can purchase to your heart's content and are also sold on ASOS.

All of the packaging is gorgeous but my personal fave is the ice lolly shaped soap, this would make such an amazing present!

Pat Butcher

The colours of the products I was sent are very glittery and pastel-y whereas I am much more of a neutral girl. I just decided to embrace my inner glitter loving Pat Butcher-esque side and let loose!  I would not wear anywhere near this much glitter on a regular day but I did want to showcase the products actually on my face.

The products I used were the Shoe Palette in Vertigo Stiletto on the lips (paler one), The Crystallizer in pink on the cheeks and mint green under the brow and Venus Pearls in the colour Aurora on the eyes.

The packaging and consistency of the products was totally spot on, easy to blend products which are well pigmented and apply easily.  Price wise I would say most of the items are around £2 or £3 overpriced, for example the shoe palette is £10 when I would have suggested about £8 to be more fair.

Colourwise I wouldn't personally buy the Crystallizer as it's just too much bling for me, nor the Venus Pearls in Aurora as they have lots of other nicer colours such as a navy blue with a tint of fuchsia which sounds much more my style.

I will also be reviewing the muffin and meringue set of lip glosses separately as I like them so much they deserve their own post.

All in all if you are a girls girl then this is definitely a brand to check out.

My Favourite Face Brushes

Sleek Foundation Brush
This came in the 21 piece starter pro brush kit that I received at the Sleek Makeup bowling competition that I went to earlier in the year.  This has got a lot more use than my Mac 190 which is quite surprising to me!  It blends better and is  very soft, it is great for thicker foundations and spreads them quickly to give a great coverage. I use this more for a flawless finish on a night out as it doesn't sheer out the foundation. It washes really well and the handle is comfortable to hold. 9/10  minus one point as the handle is a bit long

ELF Powder Brush
I have 3 of these Elf powder brushes. I use it to buff in my setting powder, mineral powder, mineral veil or sometimes blusher if it has been coming out too sheer with other brushes.  This gives a flawless airbrushed looked and buffs away all of that dusty powder look that you can get with some products.  It is super cheap yet looks expensive and is a doddle to wash and dry.  It is made of man-made fibres so it kind to animals.  For £3.50 you can't get much better!  10/10

Sigma F50
I don't know why this washes better and sheds less than my Mac one but it just does. I wish it didn't in a way as my Mac version was flipping expensive!
I use this pretty much every day for all light or sheer foundations and to blend my concealer out into my cheeks so it doesn't look too obviously.  It makes blending out light liquid foundations and tinted moisturisers really easy and, while your hands do a great job too, I just prefer this most days.  It is easy to wash and comes up white at the tips which my Mac version struggles to do even though I use the same makeup with it.  All in all its great value for money. 9/10 minus one as you have to buy sight unseen online

What's more important than whitening?

16 December 2010

Regular readers will definitely know that I endorse taking care of your teeth and have an obsession with expensive toothbrushes, however a lot of people forget that along with whitening, brushing and flossing you really do need to sign yourself up for some form of dental insurance.

I was reading an online survey recently which showed that 45% of the women polled had been put off going to the dentist because of the costs involved.  NHS dental treatment in most of the UK is charged in three bands, regardless of the length of the course of treatment you receive. This means it only really works out cost effectively if you are having a course of treatment.

Dental insurance can give you the peace of mind to know that, if you do need to go to the dentist the bill isn't going to make you pass out.  Yes, you may have to pay a small premium per month but when 1 extraction can cost around £85 it seems worth it in the long run, as toothache is not something that you can ignore.

I am insured through AXA, who have also teamed up with Tesco Personal Finance, and the service I have received from them has always been impressive.  When you think how much a lot of us spend on handbags and shoes the cost of dental insurance seems extremely reasonable to safeguard your health.
What I really like about the Tesco website, aside from all the insurance information, is the section with tips on dental health such as this information about flossing

"Flossing helps to remove the plaque and bacteria from between the teeth and under the gum line, helping to prevent decay and gum disease. It can be an uncomfortable feeling at first but with regular flossing your gums will get used to the sensation."

I know a lot of people who do not floss so I would definitely encourage you to give the website a read and get a few tips.

Do you have dental insurance?  How do you feel about flossing?

What is Zoom Teeth Whitening Really Like?

Recently I have covered In-Office tooth whitening with Evolution Smile-X, home whitening with Mint Cosmetics and many whitening toothpastes such as Beverly Hills Formula and Yotuel.

I was wondering how it would be possible to cover a different in-office service without having the spare money to have it done again or knowing any friends that were having it done.

Step in the lovely Lucy who I met whilst getting my Jinny Lashes applied.  I could tell straight away that Lucy isn't the sort of person to lie about treatments or 'big them up' even if she is working with the people doing them, she is a very honest and down to earth gal so I had no qualms in asking her if she would mind reviewing and sharing her experience with us to get someone elses experience with a different brand of whitening.  I had previously been told be dentists that Zoom whitening was a bit rubbish so I was interested to see what Dr Darfoor did that made it work.

The rest of this review is written by Lucy.

The Promise:
Using the unrivalled Zoom! tooth whitening system, Dr Darfoor can whiten teeth by up to nine shades in one sitting. Stains and discolouration are removed instantly, revealing a brighter, more beautiful smile. The gentle, yet effective tooth whitening process is the ultimate rejuvenating beauty treatment.

The Procedure:
I arrive at the prestigious Number 1 Harley Street location and home to Dr Simon Darfoor, the UKs leading cosmetic dentist. I have always heard mixed views regarding tooth whitening so it was time to discover more and trial this well reputed in-office tooth whitening myself.

Before whitening and treatment for erosion

After

Initially apprehensive, I was soothed by the very friendly and charming Dr Darfoor and his delightful team of assistants including the wonderful Marjana who was on hand to help with this treatment. Gentle jazz music filled the room whilst Dr Darfoor embarked on the initial consultation, and diligently ‘colour matched’ a shade of white that would compliment my skin tone without looking Jodie Marsh neon. Dr Darfoor also established the condition of my teeth and gave me a diagnosis of ‘enamel erosion’ down to my acidic diet. However, this would not detract from my smile make over as it was decided that the areas of undamaged enamel would be whitened and the eroded areas renewed with invisible cosmetic fillings. Phew!

Using mock ‘teeth’ from an extensive library, it was decided that I would go 9 shades whiter! I have always wanted a brighter, more gleaming smile and I wasn’t going half measures here. I drink a lot of coffee plus years of chocolate and naughty snacks have done nothing for my teeth. It was time to wave goodbye to my slightly yellow teeth and say hello to some new pearly whites. Dr Darfoor explained that this level of whitening would consist of a 3-stage tooth whitening process, with each ‘session’ lasting 15 minutes. He also described the variety of tooth whitening methods he offers and discusses who they are aimed at plus how the processes work on a scientific level that is easy to grasp.

A mouth prop was fitted to protect my lips exposing my teeth and gums. Some protective glasses were also placed over my eyes and a gum guard material was adhered to the inside of my mouth in order to protect my gums. Once this was complete, I was ready for action; a special hydrogen peroxide photo-sensitive gel was blended and then ‘painted’ onto my teeth, missing the areas of damaged enamel. The in-office UV light was then placed over my mouth. This process was repeated 3 times with Dr Darfoor paying close attention and showing me the whitening progress after each 15 minute cycle.

The whole experience was simple and pain free. Despite some mild sensitivity over the following hour, I was astounded with the results. I was told not to eat anything that would ‘stain a white blouse’ for the next 24 hours to ensure the very best results. I was then invited back two days later to proceed with the cosmetic fillings.

The eroded enamel on my teeth from my acidic diet was not only unattractive but also painful. Dr Darfoor carefully mixed a composite formula that perfectly matched my new white teeth. This was adhered to the eroded enamel and polished. The end result was flawless, no visible fillings or joins, just a beautiful new smile. Plus I can now drink and eat anything I like without that awful ‘zinging’ sensation from the erosion.

The Result:
My teeth have never been my strong point until now. Dr Darfoor almost moved me to tears with this transformation. Simple and incredibly effective, Dr Darfoor has not only rejuvenated my smile, but has maintained the health of my teeth plus advised me how to move forward with my dental care from this point on. Now I can see why celebs love Dr Darfoor…

The in-office tooth whitening at The Darfoor Dental Practice can last from six months to three years depending on the colour of your teeth, lifestyle habits and if you follow up with maintenance sessions and costs £450 www.drsimondarfoor.com

I can definitely say that if I was going to go for the Zoom treatment I would see Dr Darfoor rather than anyone else, the results really are brill, I saw Lucy last night and close up her teeth look just as wicked as the pics.  Thanks Lucy for your review xx

OMG Christmas Is Less Than Two Weeks Away!

14 December 2010

Now is the time when I start to panic. I still have to buy some sort of poncey named fishing rod for Matt and work out what my Grandad actually wants, what on earth do you want when you are over 80 that isn't socks or shortbread??

So I have had a quick trawl through the websites and come up with a few goodies, some I have tried, some I just think look nice and are quite universal presents that could suit lots of people. Consider this a hint if you are reading this mia famiglia ;P

First up we have Philosophy.  I love ginger and gingerbread and The Gingerbread Man smells amazing, can be used in the bath or shower and comes already packaged in a super cute box. You get a massive bottle for £13

You may have noticed I like brushes. So this mini set from Bare Minerals caught my attention. The case is gorgeous, the brushes look amazing and they are pink tipped!  All for £25, which seems very reasonable.

I got this after seeing it on Zara (mouldyfruit)'s blog and have been using it every single day.  It smells light but fruity and has notes of guava and pear along with vanilla and orange blossom so it is girly but not overpowering or sickly sweet.  I think this would appeal to quite a wide range of girls, from teenagers to 30's really. Costs around £34 for 30ml from Boots or the perfume shop

The bags and purses from Aspire Style are super duper cute and are perfect for aunties, mums, sisters or a mate! I love the little bags that look like postcards.  Aspire have lots of reasonably priced goodies all under £20

Everyone I have introduced to Korres has been really impressed so I think this 'All I want' kit from Liberty would go down really well.  You get a Japanese Rose shower gel, body butter and a rice proteins shampoo and achilea conditioner (all 50ml) for just £12.00. Now that is a serious bargain!

What do you want for Christmas?  Do you know what you are getting?
