Gelish Design Day Training

28 March 2011

I recently made another trip to the fabulous Sarah Bacchus at Nail Harmony Hampshire

After learning how to use Gelish, apply it, remove it etc. etc. it seemed like the next logical step was to learn how to create designs with Gelish.  Gelish is so much easier to manipulate and create with than polish as it never smears or bleeds into the other colour, and you can set the colour or wipe it off and change it if you don't like the design so it is mega versatile.

Here are some of the designs that we came up with on the day
L-R: Firework, stripes, flock, butterfly, half moon, glitter design, flower and dots, colour fade.

We used all sorts of tools from makeup sponges and striper brushes to gems from craft shops and lots of glitter.  My favourites are the colour fade as it looks really subtle but cool and the flock wallpaper effect is soooo cool.

The matte background with shiny pattern 'flock' effect

So that means that I -at Beauty Retreat ,will now be offering all sorts of Gelish nail art if you want it!  Thanks again Sarah xoxo

Current Favourite Shower Products

26 March 2011

These have been my favourite shampoo, conditioner and shower gel/body exfoliator for months now so I wanted to share them as I have tested them for ages and find all three fabulous.

Xen Tan Body Scrub £14.99 from www.xen-tan.co.uk

This body scrub is perfect for me. I need a scrub that exfoliates the skin, can be used more than once a week, smells nice, has easy to use packaging, is decently priced and lasts a good amount of time compared to the price.

This scrub is grainy but not scratchy so can be used a couple of times a week, which is helpful if you are tanning or have dry skin as once a week isn't often enough.  It smells minty and is amazingly refreshing when you use it, it's like a toothpaste feeling for you skin!  The pump action and clear bottle mean that you know how much is left and its easy to pump onto you body mopp/sponge/shower pouff (I use a pouff).  The price isn't mega cheap but I think it's extremely reasonable for the quality of product and it lasts around 5 weeks before I need to repurchase.  This is brilliant for tanners as it doesn't contain any oil but is still very moisturising. I absolutely adore this product and it is my favourite out of the entire Xen Tan line. An absolute must buy.

Tigi Bed Head Superstar Sulfate Free Shampoo £5.99 TK Maxx

I have loved using this shampoo. I really do enjoy all of the Label.M and Tigi Bed Head Superstar products but the Superstar volumising shampoo is both sulfate-free which means it doesn't fade the colour in your hair if its dyed and it contains lots of proteins and nutrient-rich oils strengthen your hair and add shine.  I do find a difference in the volume of my hair too when I use this and the massive bonuses being that the tube is mega pink and shiny and it smells of strawberries! This is a total girly dream product, it looks and smells amazing and does what I want and gives me some oomph and volume.  Plus... it was £5.99 in TK Maxx!!! I need to go and stock up on this before they stop selling it.

TIGI LOVE PEACE & THE PLANET ECO AWESOME MOISTURIZING CONDITIONER £7.61 from Lookfantastic

I had run out of my Tigi Superstar conditioner and was looking in Salon Services whilst I was buying some tanning supplies (disposable gstrings if you wondered) and saw this. Cranberry Orange Mint was what sold me, it smells absolutely delicious and yummy. It actually turned out to be an amazing conditioner as well!  The conditioner is 80% Organic Content. No Parabens. No Artificial Colors. No Synthetic Fragrances. Tube 50% Post Consumer Recycled material.

This is my favourite kind of conditioner, one that is really thick as I hate that feeling of conditioner sliding down your back.  I leave it on for 3-5 minutes and when I rinse off my hair feels so soft and amazing. I wish I had found this much sooner as I am in love with it.  The hair looks better and smells amazing, I would never have thought that cranberry, orange and mint would even go together.

What have you been using in the shower recently? Any new items?

Brand New Beauty Blogger - Beauty Reigns

25 March 2011

Today's brand new beauty blogger is Mercee from Beauty Reigns, having both beel ill for a few weeks there has been a delay in getting this up so apologies Mercee, I hope you are feeling better now x

Hi!

My name is Mercee and I’m a beauty therapist.  I started my blog, Reigning Beauties, as an off shoot of Beauty Reigns which is my company (www.beautyreigns.co.uk).

I originally started my blog just to vent my passion for beauty products and make-up as none of my friends share my enthusiasm and only my little sister really kind of gets excited with me when I start gassing on about stuff.  I think everyone else in my life just switches off when I go on about products!
I’ve read beauty blogs for years but never contemplated writing one until summer last year when I thought I would give it a go just for a laugh.  It’s always just been a bit of fun to share my purchases and fads but I didn’t expect to make any friends or join a community with such great people in.  :0)
So here I am now, flogging me wears and hoping you might hop on over and have a little peek at www.reigningbeauties.blogspot.com  Maybe even show some love?  ;0)  I hope if you do have gander that you find it interesting and a fun read....
Your browser may not support display of this image.
Thank you to Sarah for having me over on her blog as a “Brand New Beauty Blogger”.  Such a lovely thing to do and such a lovely lady to do it.

Ultralase Laser Eye Surgery

23 March 2011

One thing I would really love to have done - surgery wise, is Ultralase Laser Eye Surgery.  It's something I have thought about for a long time and something I think would really benefit me and be quite a life changing experience.
I have heard a lot of great reviews about Ultralase,  they establishes in 1991 and were the UK's first laser eye surgery clinic.  They have carried out more than 220,000 treatments so far.
I am sure a lot of people might think the idea of eyesight laser correction is a bit vain as you can just wear contacts or glasses, but my glasses hurt my nose and my contacts hurt my eyes as they are so dry! I can't win lol!
There is also the argument that over the years of not updating prescriptions, buying lens solutions or disposable lenses, frames etc. that you end up spending less if you have the surgery, which is something to think about.
At Ultralase the consultation consists of lots of tests to ensure that you and the surgery are compatible, similar to normal eye tests plus eye mapping to ascertain the nature of the eye issues you have.  They will then tell you if you are suitable for the treatment and if so, which type of treatment you should have.  You can then book in or not as you decide or if you want to go for it, you then book in for the big day!
First of all you are given a talk about the procedure and whether you have Lasik or Lasek they will explain the differences, then you sign you consent form and they do their thing.
The colleague I used to work with that used Ultralase said she was shocked as the whole treatment was painless, you would expect there to be some pain or something really wouldn't you? I know I would have! But no she felt no pain.  A lot of famous people have also used Ultralase which puts me at ease as they would lose more money than me if the treatment didn't go well and they had faith in the procedures.  The treatment is fairly expensive, but as with all things to do with surgery, you often get what you pay for! They do offer payment plans though if that's a problem.
All in all, the more I think about this the more I want it done. oooh just to save those pennies up now.
I would LOVE to hear from you if you've had laser eye surgery and any info that you can share would be fab.Sarah x

Illamasqua Toxic Nature Collection For Spring Summer 2011

22 March 2011

I was very kindly sent the above items as I was too ill to attend the launch of the range, I was so grateful as they were all items that I really really wanted to try.

What Illamasqua say about the range "In retaliation against the genetically modified society that plunders it, the landscape has issued forth a torrent of hybrid shades. Corrupted hues glister amongst muted tones - extreme, intoxicating versions of their original selves.
This is an atomic-botanical environment where survival is key and camoflague by colour is the path to existence.
We scoured the abandoned toxic wastelands of the world to create an eclectic selection of corrupted hues for the eyes, lips, nails, face and body. Flitting effortlessly from poisonous pastel to hazardous neon, this cataclysmic mix of brave new tones take your look to the outer limits of nature's palette.
Become a herald of the new age of Toxic Nature with uncharted night-time make-up."

I think the cream pigment is perfect for cheeks, I love the peach colour and the consistency is so soft and smooth.  The pigment is also matte which is fab, you can add shimmer with you highlighter.

The eyeliner is a glistening nude colour, I am not really sure what to pair it with though? I would like to do a FOTD with the products when I feel a bit better so any suggestions gratefully received.

My favourite thing out of the three is 100% the Gamma Nail Varnish, RRP is £13.50 and it is sooo worth it.

Gamma is a mega mega flouro orange and I am going to go mad for this on my toes this Summer! This is such an Ibiza colour, hmm just need a ticket to Ibiza though lol!

Find it here - definitely at least one item in the range for everyone, the nail polishes are amazing.

I want to also pick up Bacterium nail varnish when I go shopping. I really am not feeling great still, I finish my last lot of antibiotics tomorrow and my combinations of Ubertan and spray tan are at least making me look a lot more healthy! I'll get there, I just need to make sure I get enough food and sleep, and work out some way to be able to go to the gym when I want to. I moved to a gym near work but it works out that I'd have to get the train at 6am just to get a 1 hour workout in before work, there isn't time for a proper workout at lunch and after work I get to the gym the same time as I used to get to the gym round the corner from my house, but then have a 2 hour journey of tube, train, walk to get home after than. It's just too much really.

I need to sort something out. If anyone knows of any well priced gyms in Orpingon or Bexley with FREE parking and decent treadmills, cross trainers and free weights and matts then let me know, not bothered about pools and the less kids the better.

Collin Resultime Regenerating Collagen Gel and Masque Lifting Minute

20 March 2011

I have been giving all of the Collin Resultime products I was sent a thorough test and these two are now firm favourites.

Collin's Regenerating Collagen Gel has become a daily staple used before and after my day and night cream to help plump up my skin.  On days that I have had a really bad dry patch somewhere I have put a thick layer onto my face, gone and had my cup of tea and got dressed then come back and wiped the excess off before doing my makeup, using it somewhat like a primer.  Its fantastic at plumping and hydrating you skin before makeup application and has really made using foundation so much easier when my skin has been so dry.

Collagen skincare gets a bad rep as scientists have found that collagen is too big to pass through the dermis, so lots of skincare systems make up a lot of fancy pants words like 'vectorised' and 'micro delivery system' to make it sound as if they can  actually in their product.

The lovely Jane from ModestyBrown knows lots of technical info so I asked her about this issue, and she advised "Micro collagen is a pentapeptide that is repeated many times to make up the collagen protein. Vectorised means it's had a bit added to help it move through the skin. Whether or not the pentapeptide will actually be active in the dermis and stimulate in the same way as collagen is supposed to. Well, I couldn't possibly say......".

Although despite this I really really like this product haha! Just shows that sometimes things just work for some people, and this works for me and I love using it.

I love the peach jelly consistency and the gentle floral scent isn't overpowering or annoying at all, it smells very fresh.

The second product that I am enjoying using is the Collin Morpho-Skin Minute Lifting Mask.  It is a fresh and energising face mask for an instant lifting effect. I am not exactly a big wrinkly but the mask is definitely one to make you skin feel more firm and smooth. The mask is a pink cream with a soft pearly texture.  It has a lovely light scent which is good as you apply a thick layer to the face and leave for five minutes. It definitely makes you face look more radiant and smooth. You can use this 2 to 3 times per week and it definitely makes you face look more rested.

Please note that I have very very dry skin that is prone to eczema, so I would recommend these products for people with similar skin or who are older and have wrinkles as they are both very plumping and moisturising.

Different Types Of Nail Treatments

19 March 2011

From talking to a lot of girls/women I realised that sometimes because YOU know something you just assume that other people know it too, when they often don't. I guess that's why the phrase is that assuming makes an ass out of u and me ;P

Having mentioned the terms 'sculpted nails', 'soak off gel polish' and 'natural nail overlay' over the past week to be left with a rather blank look each time I thought I would explain them all just in case you didn't know, and wanted to!

Gel Overlay and Gelish Nail Art by
Bev Rose from Nails at Home

Gel - gel gives you a similar effect to an acrylic nail but instead of the technician mixing the liquid with the powder the gel comes already mixed and the gel is cured under a UV or LED lamp to 'set' it.

Acrylic Pink and White Nails by Louise at Polished -
Link in my right hand sidebar
Acrylic Nails - Acrylic nails are, as they sound, nails that are overlaid or extended using acrylic.  The acrylic is also called L&P or liquid and powder as there is a powder and a liquid (monomer), this is mixed together to form the 'bead' the little round blob of product that is on the brush of the nail technician and then they use this to either overlay, extend over a tip or sculpt an extension.

Stiletto Nails - these are pointy nails like the ones below.

Nails by Emma Prescott from Limelight Hair and Beauty, Warrington

Gelish Nails By Me! At Beauty Retreat

Soak Off Gel Polish - Goes on like a nail varnish, lasts like a gel and soaks off with acetone or an acetone based product.  Examples are Gelish which I adore, Shellac which I like and lots of other brands such as Gelez, Opi Axxium etc.

Natural Nail Overlay - This is when you have a product such as acrylic or gel applied over the top of your natural nail - with no tips or sculpted length, just a coating over your natural nail.

This is an overlay done by Sarah Bacchus

Hope this has helped and if you have any nail-terminology related questions or queries then just let me know - want to know the difference between an infill and a rebalance - just ask!

Betty Hula Shea Butter Moisturising Cream Review

18 March 2011

I was sent a small sample of the three scents of the Betty Hula Shea Butter moisturising cream and I have to be honest, I cannot deal with the scents of the orange and pink tubs. I believe these are Champagne and Spice and Rum and Blackcurrant but they just smell like air freshener to me.

I like the scent of the Kiwi and Lime cream  as it smells fresh and zingy and a bit exotic.  The Betty Hula products are natural and made with fair trade ingredients such as Shea Butter, Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E.

I got two uses of the sample as a hand cream so I can't comment on how it is on the body but on the hands I found it was a lovely whipped butter type texture that sunk in quickly.  I did find it a little greasy for a little while after applying but on my dry arms or legs it probably wouldn't have been.

The price of the cream is the main drawback for me, £17.99 for 120ml which is pretty expensive, I don't mind paying that much for Elemis where the skincare is literally amazing smelling and I adore it, but for something I just kind of like. I don't think I would buy it, I have to be honest.

If you would then you can buy from here www.bettyhula.co.uk

Orly French Polynesian Island Spa Manicure Kit

16 March 2011

I offer this at Beauty Retreat but you can also buy a Orly Island Spa Polynesian manicure kit to use youself at home and OMG it is delicious and gorgeous and you should 100% get it if you like to do your manicure at home or maybe for a mother's day gift as the smell and products are amazing.

The Kit Contains:
Paradise Polish renewing hand buff
The hand buff is a yellow scrub that exfoliates dry and dull skin gently to reveal soft and radiant skin on your hands.  The scrub is gentle but effective and definitely not scratchy as it's more like a paste.  The ingredients are sugarcane crystals and crushed Tahitian coconut shells to smooth away rough skin and pineapple extract to brighten the skin.  The Tiare flower delivers hydration and the delicious scent.
Hot Lava self–warming hand repair mask

This is my favourite step of the manicure, you dampen the hands and then smear with the mask which heats up on contact.  When I am doing this on someone else I apply the mask to the hands and then use a hand liner (looks like a think plastic bag) and then put on towelling mittens then wrap in a towel so the hands stay warm.  The ingredients help to really nourish and soften the hands and the Tahitian coconut oil and tiare flower smell lush mmm. Delish.  Once you rinse this off your hands are left mega soft and smooth.  I love the fact that it heats up!

Tropical Dew maximum moisture hand butter

This hand butter is absolutely delish, it smells almost identical to the mega expensive Elemis frangipani monoi oil melt which is one of my fave products ever ever ever, and this is so much cheaper!  It is ultra rich and makes your hands so soft and smooth it contains the same oils and moisturisers as most of the other things in the range and coconut oil which is so good for you skin.

I wholeheartedly recommend all of the products in this range, they all do what they say they will and I love em! I wouldn't use anything less than the best on my lovely clients and this is my main spa manicure range.  All products purchased by me.

You can get the mini kit for around £14.95 from various online stockists (just google).

Nail Harmony Hampshire - Gelish Love

14 March 2011

Nail Harmony Hampshire Training Review

Watching Sarah at work

I recently attended a Gelish training day with Sarah Bacchus who is a celebrity nail technician and Master Nail Educator for the brand Nail Harmony.  Sarah covers the Hampshire and Isle of Wight areas but I drove there from Kent as I wasn't able to train locally as I had first planned. Sarah and I have chatted on Twitter and Facebook before so I knew that she was a nice person as well as a great educator so I knew the drive would be worth it.

The Gelish conversion course covers everything from the product chemistry to the practical demonstration, we were shown how to apply a tip to extend with structure gel and Sarah also demo'd an acrylic extension and a hard Gelish extension in case we decided to go on those courses so we knew how to use those with Gelish as well.  As well as practising on each other we used plastic tips to perfect our French manicure 'smile lines' and to try out different colour combinations, Deep Sea and Mint Icing was my favourite as it made a beautiful teal blue with sparkles.  Everyone on the course also signed up on the spot to attend the Gelish design day where we spend the whole day playing with Gelish and trying out nail art designs, glitters and colour mixing. Ooh I am so excited!
Vicki from Charlotte's (the only Gelish - er on the Isle of Wight at the moment)
Sarah - Master Educator for Nail Harmony

Sarah's training academy is actually in her house, it is separate from the rest of the house and, as you can see, is perfectly contained but also near to the kitchen for handy tea and biscuit action (too many biscuits in my case..mmm) I would love to have something like this in my house one day, can you imagine, it's like a nail wonderland! Everything you could possibly ever want or need relating to nails was there, it was like Gelish heaven.
I had a fabulous time on my course and I didn't want to go home! It was amazing to finally meet Sarah and it's obvious why she is a master educator as she is so knowledgeable and so passionate about the brand.  I had never even seen anyone sculpt an acrylic nail before and she made it look so easy, I imagine doing that is not easy at all so to make it look so must take great skill and technique.

Before Gelish and After Gelish (Starburst)

I would 100% recommend going to Nail Harmony Hampshire if you plan on training in any of Nail Harmony's products or, if you just want your nails done in Hampshire and want someone amazing then send Sarah a tweet > @sarahbacchus and she will be able to recommend someone she knows I am sure.  I have never met anyone so passionate about the product that they are training in, Sarah is amazing.

New - Viktor and Rolf FlowerBomb - La Vie En Rose

13 March 2011

I am obsessed with Viktor and Rolf perfume and they are introducing a new limited edition fragrance Flowerbomb - La Vie En Rose in April.

Opening with bergamot and tangerine accords, the heart notes comprise a rose and lily-of-the-valley bouquet enhanced with pink peppercorns. It ends with amber and woody notes of cashmere and patchouli.

I am definitely grabbing a bottle of the La Vie En Rose eau de toilette - the bottle is pink for a start! As usual it will be pretty pricey priced at £74.50 for 50ml but I think their scents are worth it as they are so delish.

Some Recent Purchases

12 March 2011

I haven't been splurging on makeup so much recently, but that's not to say that I haven't been spending (erm hello this is me).  I have got myself this lovely pink beauty trolley which has room for my lamp and polishes, gels, all files, towels and liquids and there is a top part which is removable for all of my lashes and glues for eyelash extensions. I love it!  I bought it from a stand at the beauty show but I think it was from La Beeby.

I also received the EZflow Spa Elements manicure and pedicure kit as part of my pedicure training. The white tea lotion is definitely a favourite with clients for their foot massage as it smells gorgeous.

I was my birthday last week but I was too ill do to anything or go out so we went out today to a local Chinese restaurant and I wore this top that I got from a friend:  I wore it with black leggings and a black blazer, and black wedge shoe boots from River Island.

I bought the Chanel Black Pearl nail varnish and some Chanel nail decals as I thought they were so cute. And how gorgeous is the nail colour?

I bought my second tube of Diorskin Nude concealer. This stuff is absolutely fantastic for undereye circles. The best I have ever tried! I love this x a million. Much better than MUFE waterproof concealer for me.

Have you bought anything exciting this week?
