A slightly better hair extensions picture

30 April 2011

For those that had asked to see my hair extensions at the back, and asked how long they are, they are 14 inches and the hair is European virgin (ie uncoloured) hair from Perfectress.  Hope this helps. If you have any other questions I will try and answer them or will ask Den who put them in if I don't know the answer.  As loads of people have been sending me messages this is where I got them done: Sibs Salon by Den and they are called Micro Loops.

Coming up soon on I heart cosmetics will be reviews of John Frieda 3 Day Straight, Korres' new SPF range for Summer, CND Shellac, Cnd Solar Oil and cuticle oil information in general, an update with Kate Middleton's nail polish of choice for the wedding and, as always, more fake tan!

Curly hair with Yogi and Pink Lips with Clinique

As my hair is now a lot longer I can actually curl or style it which is very exciting for me, but also a bit daunting, I have never had to do that before as my hair barely even needed much brushing!  I have always wanted long curly hair and, with a bit of practice, I think I might be able to get better and really do it properly.  I have been practising a bit this week and this is what I have managed so far.

I used my Yogi hair wand finally! My hair wasn't long enough before and it just looked a bit rubbish but now I can curl it round and round!  I followed the instructions on the Yogi website as I don't really know what I am doing and I have copied and pasted them below in case it helps someone else.

  1. Take a section of the hair
(the smaller the section, the tighter the curl).
  2. Holding the end of the sectioned hair, place the wand close to the root (be careful not to touch the scalp) and wrap this section around the wand.
  3. Keep the hair in this position, tightly against the wand for approximately 10 seconds.
  4. Gently pull the wand out of the curled section of hair making sure that you continue to hold on to the end of the hair.
  5. Release the hair and achieve your perfect YOGI curl.

The Yogi wand is always in magazines and they sell these in the salon that I got my hair extensions done (Sibs Salon) so I knew it was a good brand to use.  They cost around £65 from www.yogihairwand.com/ and come in different colours if you don't want just black.  They come with one heat proof glove but to be honest I really do think they should come with two as I still managed to burn myself a bit when I did the other side of my head and had to switch hands.  Then again I just checked and they do only cost £4.95 so I could have just bought another one lol!

It also came with a heat resistant pouch which is really handy as you can put it on your lap or the side so you don't melt or burn anything.

Overall I much prefer this wand to my Babyliss one and recommend this Yogi one for use with normal hair or extensions.

Clinique Chubby Stick

Another product that I have been loving this week is the Clinique Chubby stick. I love pink or peach glossy lips so I got Whoppin Watermelon and it's so handy to pop on without a mirror and it is really shiny and moisturising.

The colour is quite sheer so if you want a bit of 'bang for your buck' then you aren't going to get it with the Chubby Stick but I really like it and it fits in with my three million other pink lipglosses very nicely!  It costs £13.50 and I think I might get Chunky Cherry as well.

What have you been loving this week?

OPI Black Crackle Vs Filthy Gorgeous Air-Kiss

25 April 2011

When I first saw pictures of the crackle polishes I won't deny it, I thought they looked a bit crap.  But I saw the OPI Black Shatter the other day and thought I should try it for myself.

I figured it would look better over a bright colour so I picked the brightest I could find out of my box of tricks which is the amazing blue by Filthy Gorgeous (from Debenhams) called Air-Kiss. I only needed one coat of the blue and then I applied one coat of the OPI black shatter over the top and then sat and watched as it sort of evaporated in places and crackled up.  It's actually really fun to watch it do it!

I'm still not 100% sure whether I love it or not, but Matt said that he thought it looked quite cool so it's got the man seal of approval!

What do you think of crackle polishes?

Korres Clear Sunscreen

24 April 2011

Happy Easter everyone xx

I am currently enjoying this lovely sunny weather in my garden - remember to slap on the spf so you don't burn.

My SPF of choice is Korres' new clear sunscreen SPF 20 with walnut and coconut. Its a clear liquid spray that smells quite malibu! Some of the ingredients are organic walnut oil, organic carrot oil and coconut oil to keep your skin soft and moisturised. It costs £20 from Bathsndunwind http://www.bathandunwind.com/brands/korres/sun-care.asp?amp;ft=6

This one is also water and sweat resistant so good if you're in the sea or pool.

Surcare - Washing Products to use if you have Eczema

This might seem a bit away from the norm of beauty blogging but eczema is a problem which has plagued me daily for years.  Hopefully my new find will help someone else in the same situation.

They say "At Surcare we know how important our products are to people with sensitive skin. We also know how important clean clothes are to them. Surcare may be gentle on sensitive skin, but it also gives outstanding cleaning results, even at 30ÂșC.
Around 30% of the UK population have sensitive skin. A staggering 18 million have allergies, eczema or asthma and 8 million suffer from a serious skin condition. Many washing powders and liquids contain perfumes and dyes which can irritate the skin.
Using the Surcare washing range can help give you and your family the best possible chance of avoiding skin irritation - it's non-biological, contains no perfumes or dyes and is fragrance free. Our products are also dermatologically tested and approved, to ensure they're really gentle on skin.
Surcare. Clean clothes. Happy skin."
Now I had never heard of Surcare prior to being sent some of their products last month and was a bit dubious of using anything other than Persil non Bio or Colour Care to be honest as these are what I always use, along with a sensitive fabric conditioner (any just whatever says sensitive). The Surcare products blow those out of the water! Not only does everything come out of the wash just as clean, if not cleaner, than before - it doesn't smell of anything and none of my clothes are making me itch at all!  I haven't had my allergies flare up at all since I started using the washing powder and fabric conditioner and this is amazing for me.  I have already repurchased the washing powder and fabric conditioner as I go through a lot of washing as I have to wash all of the towels for beauty retreat regularly.
The washing up product is great and only 88p!!! I am not sure if I like it more or the same as my usual one which is Ecover.  The product contains no colours, fragrances or dyes and actually cleans my plates as well as Fairy which up until this year I used exclusively, thinking it was the best. If you are looking for washing products that are good for those with eczema then look no further.
Surcare products are really reasonably priced ranging from just 88p for a washing up liquid to £2.88 for the liquid washing product.
If you have children or allergies (or both) then this is definitely worth buying to try.  They are also endorsed by Talk Eczema

Brand New Beauty Blogger

23 April 2011

Hey Readers!

I'm Ami (aka missgiggles aka tallshopaholic!) and I am a fun loving, make up and clothes buying, random, crazy student! I recently started a blog as I've been reading blogs (such as Sarah's!) daily for quite a while and I wanted to share my opinion on stuff! I love to talk so I might as well write about what I have to say too, right? lol!

I used to love buying clothes all the time, but then my attention turned to make-up! I love reading reviews about things before I buy, I even tend to get a bit obsessed! So for now, I'm buying loads of make-up while the poor clothes shops are probably feeling slightly neglected! Never mind, they'll get over it and who knows, they might see me again soon! My interest in make-up is new, so I haven't tried a lot of the brands that everyone else will have tried, but at the rate this is going, I will soon enough. I see the blog as a journey through the world of make-up that I hope will help others in theirs too.

Another thing that interests me is having discussions about issues that affect me and probably many other people. I am trying to start up these discussions over on my blog as well. Issues such as 'Should Tall Girls Wear Heels' (http://tallshopaholic.blogspot.com/2011/03/should-tall-girls-wear-heels.html) and 'Playing in mum's makeup' (http://tallshopaholic.blogspot.com/2011/04/playing-in-mums-make-up.html) have come up before, so feel free to join in!

So, on my blog, you will find reviews, pics, and discussions on topics that interest me and hopefully, interest you! I hope you will join me over at tallshopaholic.blogspot.com to follow me in my journey through just about everything, really. It's gonna be very random!!! :D

Finally, I'd like to say a big thank you to Sarah for having this feature and featuring me! :D

Hope to see you guys soon!

If you've got a new beauty blog or just
want to be featured then pop me an email x

Chocolate is not just for Easter Eggs

21 April 2011

Bellapierre's new collection of super gloss lip plumpers (£19.95) might just look like an ordinary lipgloss but they are made with natural ingredients and enriched with vitamin E plus the contain a peptide which enhances collagen production, so say hello to a plumper pout.
This shade is called chocolate cream and looks and tastes delicious, if you want to give someone a treat for Easter but they are on a diet or just don't eat chocolate then this would be a great alternative, Bellapierre also have a stunning chocolate brown shimmer eyeshadow powder (£12.99) to compliment the lipgloss.  I just used it as a wash all over the eye with black mascara and it is absolutely stunning. Love it! You could also tone it with golds, Mac's vanilla pigment or a dark browny purple.
SpaRitual's nail varnish in Death By Chocolate would also be a fab chocolate themed product as it looks just like molten chocolate on the fingertips!  A stunning shade that is classy and gorgeous.

Will you be indulging over Easter or treating yourself to some chocolate themed make-up instead?

Lee Stafford Nourishing Miracle Oil (Argan)

19 April 2011

Argan Oil is a big favourite of mine but my usual Melvita one is pretty pricey. Real Argan Oil is well known as a 'miracle' hair treatment used by the Berber women of Morocco. I find that when used pure it has so many benefits for skin and hair and really gives a massive boost of moisture. I wondered if a cheaper product would be any good, just because it said it had Argan oil in it, so I got one and thought hey - give it a try!

Lee Stafford say "NourisHing Miracle OiL contains Pro-Argan complex, which is a special blend of ingredients that will help to make your hair look amazing and feel in top condition. Pro-Argan™ complex contains Argan Oil, which is associated with the repairing of hair and the creation of luxurious healthy hair. It will help to enrich the natural shine of your hair, for the smoothest, silkiest hair yet."

When applying to dry hair, use sparingly and rub in to your hand before applying to your hair. Remember you can always add more but you cannot take away!

I find the consistency of this much like a hair serum (like frizz ease serum) rather than an oil, you use it either on wet hair to seal in moisture or a small bit on dry hair to prevent frizzies. I found this product a really nice serum, it did seal the ends of my hair extensions and make them blow dry nice and smooth, it didn't really help with shine and left them a little dull and to be honest I couldn't tell that it had any Argan oil in it as I didn't find it to smell or perform like Argan oil at all.

If you take this as a stand alone product it is nice and works well, but if you want argan I would just buy a bottle of pure argan oil.

Currently on offer at £7.99 in Boots

Do you use Argan or Morrocan Oil?

An Afternoon Tea RANT!

17 April 2011

Every now and again I like to be a lady who lunches, or who takes tea, so when I noticed that a local 4 star hotel and spa called Rowhill Grange offered a champagne afternoon tea I booked it up so Matt and I could give it a whirl.
I have had tea at quite a few London venues, my favourites being The Wolsely and The Lanesborough hotel. Matt has never had afternoon tea anywhere, and probably thought it was a bit poncey.
We were greeted by a rather stiff and bored looking man who advised us that we would be at table 305.  Considering neither of us work there I am not sure why they thought we knew where that was, and on a hot and lovely sunny afternoon we had wanted to be seated outside on the patio area, but were not given the option.  We were led to a rather dingy wood panelled room instead and seated, incredibly bizarrely, on a very low sofa with a very low table.  I did attempt to sit on the sofa but at 6 foot 2 in my wedges it was almost like I had folded myself in half, so moved to the chair, which was still ridiculously uncomfortable and so much higher than the table it was rather annoying.  Poor Matt then had to sit on the dodgy sofa.
See how much higher I am on the crappy sofa!
Like eating tea off your coffee table!
After being given our champagne we were asked if we would like our tea, I presumed they meant the actual 'afternoon tea' cake stand thing as we had our champagne just delivered, but it appeared that they actually just meant our teapot!
All of this is completely opposite to what I have experienced at other hotels. Usually as I entered the hotel, the doormen were really warm, they direct you to the tea room, there's normally a host or hostess who looks after you too but we didn't have that (unless it was the stiff bored man).
The room we were in had no ambience and we felt we had to whisper when talking even though in far nicer places we could chat normally, the Wolsely being very loud and busy and The Lanesborough the staff and pianist will chat to you and share a joke.  I didn't see any flower arrangements  in the room we were in and the music didn't fit the tone of an afternoon tea.
Amazingly, despite the sub par surroundings, the feel of the place was very pretentious and the staff repeatedly ignored us and others seated who had run out of tea.  There wasn't as much food as I have had at other teas and especially going with a man we were in need of a few more sandwiches, every other place I have been to keeps you topped up with sandwiches and tea until you are full so it seemed bizarre that nobody checked we had had enough.  After half an hour of being ignored Matt finally went and found someone who said that our tea and sandwiches would be delivered imminently.  Another ten minutes went past and then he came back and told us there would be an extra charge for the sandwiches!  Matt was so peeved by this point he just asked for the bill, I can't blame him!

You may be wondering about the actual food?  It was a typical array of sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and of course, cakes; everything was....edible.  The sandwiches were not imaginative at all and were bog standard egg, cucumber, ham or salmon, you couldn't even taste any mustard or seasoning on anything,  the scones were far too heavy and chunks fell off when you tried to spread the cream or jam on them and the cakes were too heavy and cloying, for example a profiterole with pistachio cream had been doused in royal icing? Not sure what that was about.

I've been to other tea rooms, not one has been anywhere near this bad. I would honestly have preferred to spend my money on a bottle of water and a sandwich in Boots.  Overall - 0/10 and I feel totally robbed of my £40

Micro Ring Hair Extensions

Today I got hair extensions!  I have hated my hair for many years, as despite it being in great condition as I look after it, it never seems to grow and is just so thin.

Today I took the plunge and had a full head of European hair micro link/loop hair extensions called Perfectress Transformation Connections done at Sibs Salon Sidcup by the lovely Den.

Sibs is a lovely and very busy hair salon located on a parade of shops in Sidcup, quite near Bexleyheath.  Handily there is plenty of free parking outside which is brilliant as I used to have to park in a council car park at my old hairdressers which was a right nightmare.

First I had an all over tint as my hair had faded and the roots needed doing, then my hair was washed, conditioned and then a clarifying shampoo used, and then my hair was blow dried then straightened.  I was offered drinks and magazines at very regular intervals throughout the whole day and noticed that when one of the girls wasn't working and the junior was busy everyone went about cleaning up any stations that had capes or products left or swept the floor, I found this very professional as the salon remained pretty much spotless throughout the entire day which was amazing as they were so busy, I cannot actually remember the last time I have been to a salon so busy, especially in the recession so I think this is definitely another indicator that the salon is good.

My extensions were put in by Den who is Sibs' sister.  Den specialises in extensions and she certainly made it all look very easy, even though I imagine it to be a tiring and fiddly job to have to do for hours on end. You can see her page on the website here Hair Extensions

Tonight is my first night with them in and to be honest my head hurts a little, it's a bit weird getting used to so many little extensions on my head!  I bought some Nioxin shampoo and a tangle teaser brush to look after the extensions so I will review those after I have used them a bit, as I can't wash my hair now until Monday evening.

If you have any questions please do let me know, I will try and update with how I am getting along in a week or so.

STRIP WAXING AND LINGERIE BOUTIQUE REVIEW

15 April 2011

Strip - One New Change - The Berry Room
Strip were recently announced winner of 'best waxing salon' in Harpers Bazaar Hot 100.  You might think 'who on earth enjoys a wax??' but I had my very first Hollywood today and not only was it almost pain-free, up until the very last few strips, it was even pretty relaxing!

I have had the bog standard bikini wax loads of times, and a few leg waxes, but I have been left sticky, red, sore and generally pretty unimpressed, so stuck to shaving for legs and underarms and bikini trimmer for the old bikini line.   After a friend's glowing recommendation of Strip, in particular the berry wax, I decided it was high time to book in for a gstring and leg wax and defuzz for Spring.

I figured I would head along to the salon and review it for others, like me, who are a little nervous of these sorts of things (minnie-flashing to strangers) and to see what products they used and how the therapists were.  I often find that if I am sent on a pr arranged salon visit that the treatment is performed amazingly, but do wonder if that's what a regular person would get if they booked in.  So I figured that going undercover would provide a better review.

Strip use Lycon waxes and all related products such as pre and post wax oils

I was put at ease straight away by the lovely Australian therapist at Strip who told me that being nervous was normal but that I would be totally fine, the Berry room was chosen for me and omg the wax smells good enough to eat.  The room is decorated as you can see in the picture at the top, there are also pictures of berries on the walls!  There was a flat screen tv playing episodes of sex and the city so after a while I just started watching that and we had a little bit of chit chat.

The bikini wax was not embarrassing at all and everything was incredibly sanitary.  I was provided with sanitising hand gel and wipes to freshen up my hands and bikini line before the treatment and during the treatment none of the waxing spatulas were double dipped and each one that touched the wax was fresh.  Hot wax is better for use on bikini waxing as it grabs hairs that are slightly shorter, is a lot more comfortable and provides a better result than strip waxing.  The Lycon So Berry wax that was used was fantastic, I definitely recommend it.  The Lycon so berry strip wax was used on my legs and it really looked like molten lipgloss!

So Berry – Hot & Strip Wax

Vibrant Pink, super creamy and flexible with Lycon’s latest and unique titanium dioxide technology and vanilla extract. Amazingly gentle, excellent for sensitive areas and perfect for Brazilian waxing!

I kept looking at my legs as they were being waxed as they were so shimmery and pink haha!  Both my legs and bikini area were waxed extremely quickly and efficiently, so quickly in fact that she suggested that I have a brazilian as she still had half an hour of appointment time left, I though...oh go on then, and ended up having a Hollywood (all off)!!  There was none of that sitting on all fours that I was horrified about having to do.  The positions to get the underneath hair were not at all embarrassing and didn't involve doing anything that made me feel uncomfortable.

After the wax I thought I had better get a new exfoliator, one that Matt won't nick (I told him it was only for use if you'd had a hollywood haha so far he hasn't clocked me lying) I picked up the Lycon Pink Grapefruit sugar scrub as the lady that worked there said it was her favourite and erm. ... it's pink. Dear god I'm easily sold anything lol! Bear in mind as well it was £21 ! Yes that is a lot for a bit of pink sugar, so fingers crossed it does me proud.

Find out your nearest Strip Waxing here www.stripwaxbar.com the absolute best experience of waxing I have ever had.  The one new change venue is so handy if you work anywhere near the Strand or the City of London.

And before you ask NO I DIDN'T VAGAZZLE!

ZAP THAT CELLULITE! Korres Black Tea and Verbena Cream Gel

14 April 2011

This bottle is my secret weapon. Last year I spend ages trying all the latest lotions, potions and things to rub and dry brush your legs and hips with to not much avail since the most expensive product was the winner by the clear mile, and I couldn't afford another bottle of it!

This year my lovely friend Angie gifted me this after hearing my woes about my fat thighs. Now I realise I am no heffalump, but still, everyone's allowed to moan about their body, we are women after all. The Korres Black Tea and Verbena Cream Gel is unsurprisingly a cream-gel consistency and looks sort of the colour of tea actually now I think of it.

Ingredients
Contains caffeine, black tea, verbena, chrysanthemum, white lotus, ivy, centella and ruscus extracts.

It is cooling but not freezing cold on the legs and I even use it on the back of my arms too to prevent any wobble bobbles. I think this stuff is absolutely fantastic. Don't get me wrong I don't have the nubile thighs of an Argentinian teenager, but they do look considerably less cellulitey which is my aim. And for the price I am surprised that it worked so well as with past cellulite experience the more the £££ the more it works.

In the clinical studies, 100% of woman who used the gel for a 2 month period reported a local fat reduction of 1.7cm and a decrease of the 'orange peel' appearance

This tube has lasted me 2 months of daily use and costs £28 from http://www.bathandunwind.com/brands/korres/Korres-Black-Tea-Verdena-Cream-Gel.htm

I have ordered  a replacement as mine is nearly out. A shocking occurance from me since I very rarely repurchase ANYTHING. A must buy and I love this stuff. edited to add- help! I tried to check out my order and it said discontinued???? Help where can I buy one?

I will note that there are no pictures of my arse in this post, since someone commented on another post asking where the before and after pictures are. I work in an office that is rather conservative. I have a granddad who is over 80 and a mum who is easily shocked. I am not putting a picture of my arse on the blog for all to see!! So if you don't want to take my word for it be my guest, it isn't going to make me get my junk out of the trunk for you!

Montagne Jeunesse Lipbalm

I bet you are familiar with the brand's face masks, however you may not have discovered Montagne Jeunesse's range of 100% natural Beeswax lipbalms yet. So let me introduce you.

I was sent these 2  Montagne Jeunesse lipbalms to review, which is handy since I go through lipbalm like the clappers (I have big lips and they are very dry, sometimes I get eczema on my lips too).  The Chocolate Balm is the one pictured above to the left, is my favourite due to the scent and the one to the right is Cranberry and Aloe.

All the scents are packed with pure ingredients such as olive oil and beeswax and contain no petroleum ingredients or harsh chemicals.  There are five flavours available in total and they can be picked up from Tesco, Amazon or the Montagne Jeuness website for just £3.05 so definitely a bargain.

8/10 (minus 2 for the packaging and slightly plastic taste of the cranberry)

Venus Bikini Trimmer Review

10 April 2011

I was sent the above three items as part of the Venus Gillette get set for Summer challenge which I have been invited to take part in for the second year running.  I have to admit I didn't get on that well with the epilator from last year, my mum reviewed it and she hasn't mentioned it in months so I think she must have forgotten about it too. To be honest waxing and shaving are just so much easier.

The first thing I am reviewing is the Bikini Trimmer.

I think the bikini trimmer is a fantastic idea, either for shortening your hair before you shave or, as I used it, to shorten the hair before I go for my bikini wax.

When you go for a bikini wax you need to make sure you hair is long enough for them to wax obviously, but you also don't want it to be too long, as it will hurt more.  So the best idea, if you haven't had a bikini wax for a while, is to trim them down so they are all a similar length and not too short, so they are about the same length as you would have after 5 weeks regrowth.  That way the waxer won't have to do this for you, so you will save time in your appointment.

The bikini trimmer is quick, safe and really easy to use.  You just use it in a shaving motion by combing the comb through the hair in the direction of growth, and it trims the hair down.

Then you can either use a razor or as I said, have your bikini wax.

This is also really hand for men who want to neated their bikini area but aren't into waxing and still want the hair, but just to look more tidy and also handy for men's chest hair, to trim it down and shape it without removing it all.

Overall this is a mega handy product with lots of uses!  Definitely a good buy and I have to say, probably my favourite Gillette product to date.

You can find out more information here Gillette Venus and you can often get the bikini trimmer free in the Summer if you buy a Venus razor. So look out for offers in Boots and Superdrug.
