Considering Botox?

Dr Chia Tan, founder of the Harley Street MD Gives Us Advice

Over the last decade, anti-ageing injections have moved from being ‘the’ A-List treatment to something your normal 30-something contemplates getting to slow the ageing process. I started when I turned 27, with the intention of blurring my forehead and frown lines, both of which weren’t seeing much improvement from serums and creams any more.

Why Are We All Still Confused About Botox?

I met with Dr Chia Tan, founder of Harley Street MD for a Botox treatment and to find out the answers to some common questions to dispel any myths you may have heard. Dr Tan is the founder of Harley Street MD, situated at 90 Harley Street, Central London.

So What Is Botox?

Botox is actually a brand name, the actual ingredient is botulinum toxin.  It is used medically to treat wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles and is sold commercially under a few names such as Botox, Vistabel, Botox cosmetic (OnabotulinumtoxinA or botulinum toxin type A).

So Is It Just For Your Face?

Botox is commonly used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles however Botox is useful in treating a variety of medical conditions including migraines, excess underarm sweating and leaky bladders. Botulinum toxin is currently used to treat over 20 different medical conditions!

Where On My Face Can Botox Improve?

The most common uses of Botulinum toxin are to improve the look of frown lines between the eyebrows (glabella lines), the area around the side of the eyes – to improve the look of moderate to severe crow’s feet lines, ‘bunny lines’ which are the crinkling vertical lines on the nose, the forehead – to prevent deep lines and wrinkles forming and to provide a smoother look.  There are other areas that can be treated but it is best to discuss this with your practitioner thoroughly.

What Results Does The Treatment Aim to Provide?

The treatment is used to soften the lines caused by facial expression; the duration of results varies between individuals but ranges from 3 to 6 months.  Typically, patients will come into the clinic and point to a specific line that they don’t like however it is best to organise a consultation as often, it’s not a single line that is creating you looking old, tired or grumpy, rather its multiple factors, and Dr Tan can talk you through the treatment options.

What are the key questions to ask your consultant before considering a treatment?

– What qualifications do you have?
– Which brands of products do you use and why?
– Has the product been extensively tested and researched?
– Do you have any examples of before and after pictures you could show me?
– What are the potential side effects?
– What after-care will I be given?

My Botox Treatments  at Harley Street MD with Dr Chia Tan

After a consultation and the usual questions regarding whether you are on any medication, pregnant etc. and some form filling we got to the actual main event.

As you can see Dr Tan took photos before the injections were done, so he would be able to compare them with the results a few weeks later.

Dr Tan suggested I have the following areas injected:

  • Forehead
  • Brow Lift
  • Crows Feet/Laughter Lines
  • Bunny Lines on the Nose
  • Under my Eyes

DOES IT HURT?!

The answer is absolutely not, each injection just feels like a small pinch, sometimes there is a tiny stinging feeling but that is all.  It hurts much less than an injection in your arm.  The procedure took 10 minutes tops and while there is numbing cream available the needle is so small I didn’t need it, there really is nothing to be afraid of. On a scale of 1-10 the pain is a 1.5.

The picture above is straight after the injections, as you can see I don’t have bleeding, bruising or any other side effects.

Aftercare

After Dr Tan gave me the aftercare advice (no rubbing your face, no makeup, no sweating, sauna, gym, swimming or sunbeds for at least 24 hours) I went off to work.  You start to see changes within a week or so and that the results would continue to improve for up to two weeks.

After a few days I could certainly see a difference and now, at 3 weeks post Botox, here are my before and after pictures, raising my eyebrows, squinting and smiling.  Finally I’m totally wrinkle free!

How Long Does It Last?

For the forehead and frown lines this normally lasts me 6-9 months.  I have never had any of the other areas done before. I will update once they have worn off with the details.  They do say around 6 months.

Average price of treatment:

Treatment starts from £200 for one area.  You can find the pricing details here Treatment Price Lice .  If you have any treatment at Harley Street MD it will be conducted by a GMC registered medical doctor in a CQC registered premise.

Overall Thoughts

When I raise my eyebrows or smile now.  I literally have no lines and it has only been three weeks since my treatment! I am impressed with Dr Tan’s friendly and professional manner and feel that he would put the most nervous person at ease.  It was a very positive experience which was quick and painless.  Leaving me with super smooth skin and looking more youthful and rested.
