Barry M Sunset Daylight Curing Gel Nail Paint

Barry M Sunset Daylight Curing Gel Nail Paint

Barry M Sunset Daylight Curing Gel Nail Paint is a daylight curing nail polish.  This means that the polish, along with the topcoat, cures in natural daylight unlike Shellac or Gel Polish nail varnishes, which cure in a UV or LED lamp.  The selling point behind these polishes is that they deliver the look and resilience of pro salon gel nails without a UV lamp or the expense.  I bought shade Can’t Get You Out Of My Red.

Not the best application granted!

The colour coat and topcoat need to be used together according to Barry M to get the full effect and they need 2-5 minutes in daylight to cure but there is no need for a basecoat as the special formulation bonds to the nail like a gel in daylight but can still be removed with a regular nail varnish remover so no soaking in acetone, filing or using the foil removal method.

How Could This Possibly Work Like Gel?

I have looked at the ingredients and it is the BENZOPHENONE-1 that is the photoinitator in the product.  A photoinitiator is a light sensitive ingredient which absorbs UV light and converts it into the energy it needs to drive the polymerisation process (which is the drying of the polish). It does contain a plasticizer (ACETYL TRIBUTYL CITRATE) as well which is included in a lot of long wear nail varnishes.

Ingredients

ETHYL ACETATE, BUTYL ACETATE, NITROCELLULOSE, ACETYL TRIBUTYL CITRATE, ADIPIC ACID/NEOPENTYL GLYCOL/TRIMELLITIC ANHYDRIDE COPOLYMER, ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, STEARALKONIUM BENTONITE, STYRENE/ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, SILICA, BENZOPHENONE-1, DIACETONE ALCOHOL, HYDROXYETHYL ACRYLATE/IPDI/PPG-15 GLYCERYL ETHER COPOLYMER, TRIMETHYLPENTANEDIYL DIBENZOATE, PHOSPHORIC ACID, CI15850, CI77891, CI19140, CI77510, CI15880, CI77491, CI77266 [NANO], CI74260, CI42090, CI77499

Formulation and Application

The formula is nice and pigmented in the shade that I tried, the application is easy as the brush is a good shape and flat so it covers a lot of surface area.  The polish went on easily without being streaky.  I applied two coats of colour, leaving to dry for 2 minutes between each coat, then one coat of topcoat as directed.

Drying time

Once the topcoat is applied they dry quite fast – touch dry in around 3 minutes.

Colours

There are 7 colours available, but I am sure they will bring out more if it is popular. I like classic colours so went for Can’t Get You Out Of My Red, which is a classic bright red.  And I do like the colour.

How long they lasted and my opinion:

Barry M say that these will last up to 10 days and that they deliver the look and resilience of pro salon gel nails.  These do not last longer than 2 days on my nails without chipping. They did not look as shiny or have the strength that Shellac or Gel Polish do and, finally, they do not have the luxe look that Shellac or Gel Polish nails have.  I was fairly disappointed.

While they say you do not need a basecoat, the lack of basecoat meant my nails were stained red after removal, and I had to scrub them with a flannel and some whitening toothpaste to get rid of all the stains even after using acetone to remove (bit of a tip there)!

They are a quick drying polish and the topcoat makes them marginally more shiny than a normal nail varnish but nothing more. I certainly wouldn’t recommend purchase of them, and if you do use them, you might as well use a basecoat, as they will stain otherwise.  I did find replacing the Barry M Topcoat with the CND Vinylux topcoat gave a longer manicure, which lasted 3 days before chipping.

What do you think, will you be picking any of these up?

Buy from Superdrug or Boots and RRP is £4.99 for each colour or the topcoat but there are often offers on.
