My Top 5 Facial Serums

I think that the older you get, the more important it is to include a serum as part of your skincare regime.  Use it after toning and before moisturising either twice a day or just before bed, it’s a super quick additional step that will make a massive difference to your skin.

I have so many facial serums and these are my top 5 (as at 13th May 2015 anyway)!  I have tried all of them for a very minimum of 2 months before this post, most for far longer than that. They are not listed 1-5 in order of preference, just at random.

Please note that these are obviously my recommendations for people with skin like mine.  For reference that is dry and dehydrated, sensitive with a tendency to get seborrheic eczema around my eyes if I am very stressed or tired, I am 30 and very interested in staying looking youthful.

Korres Black Pine Firming, Lifting, and Anti-Wrinkle Serum  -£39.00

I find this a nice, all around moisturising serum that is good to use in the mornings and in the summer when my skin moves from extra dry to dry-combination.  The serum sinks into the skin quickly and contains almond oil and shea butter to moisturise the skin, as well as antioxidants, which protect skin by limiting the production of free radicals which can damage skin cells (which helps protect against the signs of ageing).

This is an all-round nice moisturising serum with a lot of emollient ingredients, it’s great to use in the morning to prepare your face for makeup.  I can’t say I particularly know what the Black Pine in the product does or if it is that or the other ingredients that make me like it, but I do know that my skin looks brighter and more glowing and it feels silky smooth when I use this, which is good enough for me.  You can buy this online at Amazon and Sephora or from Liberty.

Estee Lauder New Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II – £49.00

Having not been a fan of the old formulation, I started off wary of the relatively new Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II.  The formula changes were minor but needed as I actually see results now compared to not seeing anything previously.  Despite it saying ‘night repair’ you can use this whenever you like (unless your skin is great at telling the time…?) as both the antioxidants and repairing ingredients would benefit your skin day or night.

I love this serum as it’s fragrance-free and is suitable for all skin types so suitable for my changing skin throughout the year, it contains a good mix of vitamin and plant based antioxidants and sinks in quickly without leaving my skin with a sticky finish.  My skin is definitely glowing to the point where people compliment me after using daily for a week, and for that reason I included it in the top 5, if people compliment you on your skin, you know the product is doing well! This is a bit pricey but you often get mini sizes in Estee Lauder gift with purchase bags and you can probably also buy the minis on ebay to save money.

Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age Advanced Serum – £30.00

This is an excellent serum with a very reasonable price tag, as it instantaneously hydrates for the immediate effect and keeps your skin hydrated all day.   It contains 5 forms of hyaluronic acid of to target fine lines and wrinkles, dryness and dehydration and a peptide (Matrixyl) that is used to boost and support collagen production.

This is brilliant, it does work, my skin looks better and everyone I have suggested using it to have loved it too. Unfortunately I cannot use this anywhere near my eyes and only on my cheeks, chin and neck, as something in it sets off my eczema on my eyes but I also use the eye serum in conjunction which is fine.

Overall this is the product that I would recommend to anyone to try who has never used a serum before or is concerned with ageing, dryness and fine lines.

Hylamide Eye – £27.00

This is the star of the five.   It is the only eye product I have used that actually gives results without making my eyes clogged with milia.  The packaging drives me around the bend as far too much comes out of the dropper and it gets really messy, but unless they decide to repackage it I will have to continue purchasing as the results are worth it.

The serum is high strength and contains ingredients that really do visibly improve fine lines and wrinkles and even the dreaded dark circles!! It goes on like a dream and is nice and light.  You see some results from the first day but the best results come after you have used it twice a day for about a week; you really start to see the difference then.

Flavanoid Glucoside Bio-active is the ingredient included to help encourage circulation and reduce dark circles, it certainly works for me and I suffer from dark under eye bags and have done for years.

After years of trying different products and treatments I have finally found a product that actually does what it promises. I’ve been using the serum for nearly 2 months and my eyes look so much better. This is now a staple like my Emma Hardie moringa cleansing balm.

001 Skincare ActiveMarine Power Concentrate Dual Action Formula -£35.00

Aside from Hylamide, 001 is the only new skincare company recently that I have been impressed with.  The marine concentrate is a really effective marine algae based serum that is rich in omega 3/6/9 and helps boost collagen cell turnover, a must for an anti-ageing product. It’s also highly recommended by Lisa Eldridge which is enough to make me try it out in itself!

The bottle is great and the pump provides just the right amount, the serum consistency seems to me as a little like a gel-serum which is light, sinks in quickly and perfect for use around the eye area without clogging the pores as well as on the face.  This is for when your skin is dry dry dry, after a sunny holiday, in the cold or windy weather, this will really hydrate your skin and make it look plumped and fresh.
