Hair Extension Aftercare Hacks
You’ve spent some serious cash on that Remy, that Russian Virgin or that wavy Brazilian and your hair is laidddd for the gods. You’ve been swishing it in the mirror saying “Gurrrl, you are looking fierce and letting them have it tonight, hunty!” [insert *finger snap*]. But what now? How to keep it looking good? It’s essential to get the maintenance rituals for both real human and synthetic hair down so scroll down to learn exactly how!
Why is it important to take care of your extensions?
I don’t know about you but while I’ve found great quality extensions from BeautyWorks, they are expensive. If you don’t look after your extensions they won’t last as long as they’re supposed to. The natural oils in your hair don’t reach through your extensions meaning they can dry out. Proper extension care includes daily brushing, hydrating and cleansing using products which don’t strip moisture. Excess washing and styling will damage the cuticle and decrease the lifespan of your hair extensions. Remember that like your natural hair, your extensions can be easily damaged if exposed to too much heat. Using heat on hair extensions will reduce their lifespan.
How do you take care of real human hair extensions?
It’s important to not to wash your hair too often, I recommend once or twice a week. You must wash human hair extensions with sulphate free shampoo and focus on the roots. Brush your hair through with a tangle angel to detangle without creating damage and ensure your hair is smooth before washing. Gently wash the hair with an extension specific shampoo such as the Pearl Nourishing Argan Oil Shampoo . Do not brush wet hair and do not rub apart from your own hair’s root area. Smooth the shampoo through the lengths and ends gently.
After shampooing, use your conditioner. Apply from mid-lengths to ends and let it sit on your hair for a minimum of 10 minutes before rinsing to give it time to soak in. Avoid putting product high up on the root area and make sure you rinse thoroughly to avoid build up.
Every 2 washes I replace that conditioner with Beauty Works Pearl Nourishing Argan Oil Mask which is formulated to nourish and revitalise dry hair. Let it sit on your hair for at least 20 minutes then gently comb through to get the best benefit. Focus on the mid-lengths and ends.
After you’ve finished washing gently squeeze your hair to remove excess water with your hands. Then do the same with a towel, squeeze gently but do not rub. Avoid flipping your hair upside down and doing the ‘towel turban’ as this can cause knotting. When my hair is damp I apply the Beauty Works Argan Serum. I apply a small amount to wet hair but it can also be used on dry hair.
If you can leave your extensions to air dry then they will last much longer. If you have to hair dry them use a good quality heat protectant such as the Beauty Works Heat Protection Spray. This can also be used on both dry or wet hair extensions.
Because extensions are attached to your natural hair, pulling them can result in pulling out your natural hair. Start brushing your hair from the bottom and then move slowly to the top. Ensure you are using a professional extension brush to avoid breakage and damage to your own hair; the tangle angel is my favourite as it has the same type of bristle as a tangle teezer but has a handle. My tangle teezer was annoying AF as it always kept flying out of my hand when brushing.
Never go to sleep with wet hair; always make sure your extensions are completely dry to avoid tangling and stretching. Before bed, braid your hair extensions to avoid tangling and the cuticles from rubbing together. Plait two pigtail braids or a side braid rather than one at the back so it’s easier to sleep.
On The Daily
Tongs, hair irons and heated rollers can be used on your hair extensions. However, it is advisable not to overuse heated tools as this can cause your hair extensions to dry out considerably causing breakage and snapping.
Regular brushing will keep the extensions in the best condition and prevent matting from occurring. As will using a serum or oil to lock in moisture and shine, and regularly using a deep conditioning treatment to keep your extensions in the optimum condition. I use Beauty Works Argan Oil Serum or the Show Beauty Oil.
Stay Away From
Never use salt sprays and try and avoid salt water and chlorine. If you do have to go swimming in the sea or pool, use a specific shampoo to remove this before using your regular shampoo. Apply a mist of heat protectant if you’re sunbathing or out in the sun for a long time.
