Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross – Hackney Empire 30th September

Last night I went out!!!

I was sad that I couldn’t attend one of Russell Brand’s gigs featuring Matt Morgan who used to be the co-host of his BBC Radio 2 show/podcast.  Hackney was the only London show on the tour and the interviewing special guest was Jonathan Ross.

I was unsure how the evening would play out, after the ‘manuelgate’ saga the two of them might be a bit too guarded, and in a way I was right.  Obviously Russell is in a relationship now and there were a few mentions of Katy Perry and the fact that he would no longer be able to cater to half the audience after the show as would have been the norm prior to last September but there weren’t really as many questions as I thought there would be.

It was quite a weird thing hearing him speak about her and her parents – it was really lovely, just strangely at odds with every other show I have seen him do.

During the first half Russell read from the second volume of his
autobiography, My Booky Wook II: This Time It’s Personal  and elaborated on certain stories, one about some grapes was particularly amusing.

The book has an entire section devoted to email exchanges with his hero Morrisey who was there at the gig last night (as were Kimberly Walsh and David Baddiel).  I really enjoyed the first half of the show, Russell admitted he missed doing stand up as making films was ‘boring’ although he talked about his new film, a remake of the Dudley Moore film Arthur, which he said will be “a beautiful film” and was the reason behind him shaving off all of his body hair!

The second half wasn’t quite as funny as the audience questions that were chosen and the questions Jonathan asked Russell were not exactly the grilling that it was made out that they would be although that being said I did have a great time, especially after the drama that was involved with getting my Matt to actually be at the theatre at the allotted time frame.

All in all I would give the show  4/5

So what did you get up to last night?  Who went to the Mac and Estee Lauder events?
