My Serious Anti-Ageing Regime
I’m in my thirties and started my serious anti-ageing routine to stop looking old too soon! I get botox, facials, and peels done when I can. But they are expensive. In between, I do my best with home skincare products and gadgets and wanted to share my favourites with you.
The products are mostly only used weekly or fortnightly. I am an advocate for using cosmeceutical skin care and peels, which need to be used cautiously. When starting a new regime, use small quantities of product. Build up the strength or length of time slowly to give your skin time to get used to it. I also don’t talk below about an eye cream, as I am still searching for the perfect one not because I don’t recommend using one. The below isn’t my daily routine and I do use different things on a daily basis. This is more about the special products that are more hardcore.
If wearing makeup I start with the Hylamide High-Efficiency Cleaner. It’s oil-based and will remove any stubborn makeup on the eyes and lips including waterproof mascara.
I’ve started using Dr Lancer’s suggested method of exfoliating before cleansing, you can read about it here. I currently use Exuviance Triple Microdermabrasion Face Polish. I apply this before my second cleanse. Remember to rub gently, so as not to cause damage. This step is to unclog the pores and get rid of any dead skin cells. I do all over my face and neck, avoiding the eye area. I always do a bit of an extra scrub around my lips, lip lines do nobody any favours. Then I rinse off the scrub with cold water.
My favourite cleanser is Emma Hardie Moringa Balm cleanser. I massage it into my face and really try and work it in. I wash it off with warm water and a flannel or muslin cloth. If I have time I do a bit of facial massage. I learnt facial massage at beauty college but if you need any tutorials check out Lisa Eldridge on youtube or use one of these facial rollers from Methode.
Now I have a totally clean face so: on to peeling! I have used skin peel products at home for a year now, to try and get back the youthfulness and smoothness, and make pigmentation marks and scars reduce (which they have). When I started I applied the peeling product once a month, I have built up to once a fortnight. I apply this product all over my face, neck and decollete, sometimes my hands, anywhere I feel I have sun damage. You must ensure you use an SPF 50 after you use this product as the peel makes the skin very susceptible to sun damage. I currently use Korres Wild Rose 10% AHA peeling mask or Teoxane Radiant Night Peel 15% AHA. I don’t know the PH of the peels, I should try and find out. Read this fab post here about why PH is important in acid products.
What I do After – Depending On The Day
I have recently started using a dermal roller. There are two reasons to use a dermal roller, product penetration (short needles) and the more intense, deeper type with longer needles for anti ageing and stimulating the skin. I had the deeper type done in a salon on my thighs years ago to get rid of my stretch marks years ago and it worked really well.
I do the product penetration (short-needle) rolling at this time. I use ZGTS Titanium Derma Roller Skin Therapy 0.25mm before the rest of my skincare. I roll it on my face very delicately with a feather light touch so as not to damage the skin. It is a tiny bit painful but it helps the products I apply afterwards penetrate better. I go a little harder on my lip lines and the chicken pox scars I have on my forehead. You look a bit red after so don’t do this if you need to be seen in public that day!
The idea behind the slightly longer needled rollers is that the tiny micro needles penetrate the outer layer of your skin. The skin then interprets this as a form of ‘damage’ and responds by initiating the production of collagen and elastin which is part of the skin’s healing process. Collagen and elastin are responsible for the growth of new skin and it is this new skin which repairs any damage caused by acne scars, stretch marks, cellulite, surgical scars etc. It also reduces the signs of ageing, e.g. lines and wrinkles. I will do an updated dermal roller routine post at a later date if anyone is interested.
Vitamin C Serum
I bought this to use after dermal rolling and prior to using suncream. Topical vitamin C serum is 20 times more beneficial than oral consumption. The derma rollers trick the skin into producing collagen, and vitamin c has been clinically proven to encourage collagen production so it seemed like the perfect serum to use after the roller. Mine is PurOrganica Vitamin C Serum for Face – Premium 20% Vitamin C. I use half a pipette of product and rub this all over my face. Once absorbed I apply a regular night cream. I also apply this before sun cream as it contains ferulic acid. I used to buy Skinceuticals C E Ferulic for this reason but the PurOrganica is so much cheaper at just £12.99! You apply the serum before your SPF to boost it’s sun protection power. Read this Study on Ferulic acid’s effectiveness for a great explanation of how it works.
If I’ve done an AHA or BHA skin peel I apply a retinol product after. Retinol is clinically proven to work. I do use this even if I don’t do the peel. You may be surprised to find out that research has shown that retinol combined with exfoliants like AHA’s helps fade hyperpigmentation in skin, and improves the results of both products. You can read about using both together here – AHA’s and Retinol. I haven’t so far used this after dermal rolling as I don’t think my skin could handle it.
I am currently using the Skin Active Retinol + NAG Complex from NeoStrata. This formula combines pure 0.5% Retinol alongside patented NeoGlucosamine® (NAG). This duo increases collagen production and the surrounding support matrix residing in the lower layers of the skin to lift and firm facial contours while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You can gradually increase usage until it is applied nightly but I am still on once or twice a week. I am really enjoying using this as it’s stronger than the retinol products I have tried in the past and I am really seeing the benefits.
This is a 14-day Fillerina Treatment Kit. It’s a treatment course of products that I have reviewed before and give amazing results. I use Grade 3. Fillerina allows large quantities of Hyaluronic Acid to penetrate deep into the skin. Fillerina features a mix of 6 different HA molecules of varying molecular weights and sizes that are especially effective at penetrating the layers of the skin and thus allowing tissues to be filled in and plumped up, this is important as previously the only way of ensuring that the normally large HA molecules are able to penetrate the layers of the skin was by delivering them with a needle. The treatment must be used every day for 14 days in the morning or evening, by applying 2ml Gel Filler followed by Nourishing Film. The results last for a few months, re-purchase suggestion is after 3-6 months, depending on the individual. I am saving my new box to use in November so I am ready for all those sneaky pictures people take at Christmas parties!
You can also get a 20% discount on buying this with my code, here’s the link to the post about that. I don’t get anything if you use it, I was just pleased my readers could save money.
I have also started using the LightStim For Wrinkles at home machine. The LED Infra Red technology used in this product is used by medical spas, dermatologists and plastic surgeons all over the world, so it is amazing to be able to have one at home. You can buy it here.
In clinical trials, 100% of participants reported improved fine lines and wrinkles in only 8 weeks. You can see the FDA sheet here. Plus, it is really easy to use. All you need to do is press the device against your skin for three minutes, move and repeat on all desired areas of the face.
I’ve been trying to do the 4 treatments a week since I got it. I haven’t done it for the full 8 weeks yet so I can’t comment on the results overall but I think there has been a different in my neck and I am looking forward to comparing with my before photos when I have completed 8 weeks of sustained use. It also comes with a peptide serum but I am not sure if I like that yet or not, time will tell!
